anybody else get caught in the Alberta storm Saturday?
I got caught in that hellacious storm Saturday that blew through central Alberta. I think that's the first time I've ever rubbed the bags while travelling in a straight line! It was a deadly storm - hit the Big Valley Country Jamboree and collapsed the stage...
that would be my wife and I that did. It was so nice we decided to ride out to Drumheller for a burger and beer at the Last Chance Saloon. We got into it coming home. In 40 years of riding, I can count on one hand the number of times I've pulled over and hunted for shelter from a storm while riding; that was one of them.
It hit us like a freight train; VERY unnerving to get slammed from the right side of the outside lane all the way across two lanes of road and the centerline with the first blast of wind. Brutal storm. Not only was there someone killed at the Jamboree, a 3 year old child died in Calgary during the same storm. She was walking downtown with her family and a piece of sheet metal blew off the top of a building under construction and hit her. Nasty!
Fortunately I missed it here in edmonton. The one the week before tore down a couple of trees at my place in my yard. I am sorry for the family of the woman who was killed as well as the loss of the young girl. The one draw back to being on the downwind side of the rockies the weather can change in minutes.
i was supposed to be at BVJ, but i cancelled my trip last minute. and im glad i did. all my buddies were in the first few rows, where the stage blew over. he said it was one the scariest times of his life.

I know what you mean...that storm came up in less than 10 minutes from the time the clouds started to form. It was like riding inside of a sandblaster the first couple of minutes and then the hail and rain came in sideways...
