I've seen 3 different ways dogs are carried - all of these were for medium/large sized dogs tho (like 40lbs and up):
1. Some *** around town here has an enduro style bike (dirt/street) and I has his big yellow lab just sprawled onto the seat & tank in front of him. (see attached pic of this genius)
2. I've seen the dogs pulled in trailers; I think there's links to videos on this site & you can probably google it. Some of the "trailers" are nothing more than a flat board with wheels & a spot to connect the dogs leash to. They actually drive down highways...again - another accident waiting to happen.
3. I met a couple who drove from eastern PA to western Ohio for bike week last year. They were riding 2 up - and had an open box type of setup for their mutt to ride on the bike. It was pouring down rain too - but the dog was happy as hell. I imagine my dog would be like that - she wants to ride on my bike so bad, but it aint gonna happen - unless I get a side car someday on a touring bike.
I'm with everyone else. Leave the dogs at home. Driving children around is often a challenge - and they have better ability to listen, hold on, etc. A dog - well, if you stop fast - foooooom - it fly's forward with nothing to grab onto; if you have to swerve and/or lean - same thing - foing! off the side it goes...let's not forget about it possibly getting spooked, distracting YOU from driving - causing an accident or just simply falling off at speed...
Someone said just bungee it down...I agree; maybe one of those net helmet bungee's...if it can't handle that or you can't just stick it into a close saddlebag, then leave it at home, at a kennel, or let someone in a car follow you with it.
*My opinion on the above applies to: cats, snakes, lizards, hamsters, ferrets, ducks, turtles and anything else you feel you might want to take with you on your bike!
EDIT: scratch out ferret. Those should just be exterminated to begin with. Long, stinky, rats that chew up everything...NEVER date a girl with a ferret...now matter how hot she looks...

Reason: Inserted enduro/lab pic
+1 on the ferret girl dating thing. However, ferrets themselves could be useful as a tailgater deterrent. Instead of tossing a spark plug or a lug nut or a handful of ball bearings (as I was taught) just toss a ferret over your shoulder.
