Couple of years ago I was walking out of the stealership and spotted an old friend lined up with a handfull of bikes. He said they were hog members and going for lunch and invited me along... I made it to the first corner and turned the otherway.
Have to agree, what an accident waiting to happen.
I have never ridden with HOG riders but I have to question if they ALL are as bad as some of the expert riders here make them out to be. There may be SOME careless riders but I just don't believe that the entire HOG membership are bad riders. A little exaggeration, maybe?
Technically, he is responsible. That's why we all get insurance. The easy answer to "Who's gonna pay for this?" is "the other guy." File a claim with your insurance and let them work out how to get their money back for fixing your bike.
1. He is responsible for the damges to your bike (except in no fault insurance state).
2. If his insurance commpany will not pay, he is still responsible for the damages and he has a crappy insurance company.
3. If he refuses to pay, you can claim "uninsured motorist" on you policy, do you have this? If not, you have a crappy insurance company/broker/agent.
4. You do not pay your deductable, accident was not your fault. Deductable is for repairs that YOU CAUSED. If you do, you have a crappy insurance company.
My wife will not write a policy that UNDER-INSURES her client !!
Insurance can be what you pay for, so what card do you carry in your wallet? CYOA!!

I ride with a HOG chapter twice a week and the rides are safe. It's pretty much the same group all the time and when new people ride with us they are usally experienced as well and have just come from another chapter in another state. It all depends on the membership I guess and how much they ride, since riding more equals more experience. Now, I wouldn't go on the free rides the dealer has every month for customers. Those are total chaos.
If the bike that hit you had a dealer plate on it then there is no question who is responsiable.
Our HOG chapter has new member rides and safety classes. New members go out in small groups before they go on chapter rides. Hate to say this but we have never had an accident on a ride. I have been a member since 1992. I would much rather go on a HOG ride than those big charity rides.

I ride with the HOG group almost every Sunday. We go over every sign/signal and the ride plan before we leave. If there is a guest or new member, they ride behind the lead rider. If a bike goes down, only the sweep stops to keep other bikes out of harm's way. We normally have between 12 and 20 bikes, all the riders in the group are good riders, and it has been well organized since I got involved. We have at least 12 road captains that train for everything from safety to accident management. Sometimes, things are beyond control of any rider or group of riders...part of the risk of riding a motorcycle. I cannot comment on any insurance companies reasoning but they all will try to avoid forking over any dough if there's a chance they can get away with it. Challenge what they say. Is there a police report? I bet you'll need one. Good luck....
14 months later now and his insurance just paid me my deductable and all is good now. I no longer ride with the hog chapter and probably wont ever again. Enjoy the company of my wife more than anything and just conversing with the different people we meet on our rides
