I would have been an nut not to. My dealer offered me a plan for $2k that consisted of an extra year on the warranty (with a $50 deductible) plus unlimited maintenance for 3 years including the cost of oil/filters and up to 2 new batteries. I've had it a year and already had 5 scheduled services done on it....I've used over half the cost of the plan just in that alone. When you add in the fact that having it dealer serviced for everything it retains better value. More than worth the money.

So what you have is a 3 year warranty?

When I bought my RG I was offered a 5 year extended at about $1875.The dealer also had a maintinance offer for $1500.

This sounds more like a maintenence agreement than an extended warranty, there is a difference.

There is 1) the Harley-Davidson extended factory warranty and 2) the dealership specific warranty. Personally, I would prefer the HD warranty because then you can get warranty work done at another dealership if things change at the one you use now. I have debated getting the extended warranty, but to be honest the dealerships don't really do much and the moco puts its trust in the dealerships to do things. In that sense it is useless to me because I will never get things the way I want. Besides, $1300 is a steep price. A lot of damage would have to happen to get a $1300 bill. On top of that you have to pay a $50 deductible for the work. How crappy is that.

It is a personal preference. I have owned 5 new Harleys, put 50k miles each on the first 4. Got about 20k on the current one. I never have bought a extended warranty as a personal choice but I can say I have never once in all those miles/bikes ever had any warranty work done on any of my bikes ever. Nothing ever broke. Ask around and you find that very very few ever have any problems with their bikes and usually the problem is caused when they modify the bike especially the EFI bikes. Extended warranties are HUGE money makers for not only Harley but all the other companies that have them. Oh sure some people will use them and save a lot of money but overall no one gets much more than piece of mind in having a extended warranty.

To clarify for everyone regarding my post....I know there's a difference between the maintenence plan and extended warranty. For $2k I had a year added to the warranty (so 3 years total). However, there is a $50 deductible during the 3rd year. The service plan is for unlimited services for 3 years. So, if I take a ride through Death Valley in July I can take it in and get an oil change at 1000 miles and still no charge. Basically, they through in the extra year of warranty if you buy the service plan.

I bought the warrenty...

Used to never buy warrenties but I find with the new technologies such as computers and EFI I'm not the mechanic I used to be. If it were an old bike with a carb and no puter probably not.

At any rate I didn't buy the warrenty on my car a Nissan Murano. First year they have the CVT in them. Just before 30,000 miles I thought it might be a good idea with the new transmission type. A week later my rearend (AWD) went out. So I paid like $1300 for about $5000k of dealer work. And some other problems.

If you have a warrenty use it. On my car I use it for broke cup holders, on the bike I'm using for my bags not closing properly. I paid for it I'm using it. Service writers hate me

I have never purchased an extended warranty. I think they are a total rip off.

Knock on wood: I haven't been burned yet. But, thinking a little further about this I could probably replace my bike out of my own wallet and be money ahead.

I purchased the extended warrenty on the 06 E.G. All my buds keep telling me its a wast of money. I happen to like the security, whether true or imagined I guess.

I'm considering the extended warranty. The only modifications I've done are the SE intake and the SEII slip-ons. Both of those, however, come with crossed flags warning saying the installation may limit or void your warranty. What good would an extended warranty be if they called you on those two things?
