Default Extended Warranty Coverage?

What is the view on the extended warranty that is offerd by the dealers/stealers? I was thinking of getting it for piece of mind if something were to happen after the factory one runs out. Another reason is because of the changes that have been made in the dyna line up such as the six speed trans and some of the motor "improvements". The cost for five years is $1321.23 and this would give me coverage until 2011. This would also cover the tire replacement which I undersatand there is a wear factor involved but the labor would be covered. I have an 06 Dyna Wide Glide and it is approaching the point where I need to make a decision on this, time and mileage wise.
Thanks for any comments

You will get alot of different opinions on this but here's my experience with it. 51,300 miles the warranty covered cam chain tensioner replacement. 52,000 miles front wheel bearing replacement. If I had the tire warranty it would have covered 4+ rear tires and 3 front tires (or at least part). I would have at least gotten my money's worth out of it. It depends on how much you ride, how your bike is maintained and a little luck. Tough decision. [&:]

I bit the bullet and got the extended warranty. I had it on my last three trucks. Never used it on one save me a lot of money on two. It is a crap shoot. If you want peace of mind, I would say get it.

I don't remember it even being offered to me when I got my bike.

I got notice for my '04 Dyna about a month before the factory 2-year ran out. Like it's been pointed out, it is a crap shoot, depends on how lucky or paranoid you are about the bike. I had one on our last Ford and when the front end just about fell out at 48,000 miles the extended warranty on the van saved me over 1/2 of the cost of the warranty, over $800.00. As for the extended HD warranty, yes i did bite on it, for another couple of years, just in case. I do ride a lot and would hate to get stuck with a big bill.

Well I went and got the extended warranty today. It is transferable if I do sell the bike that so is a good thing. Another part is that I can get it extended for another five years when the current one runs out for about the same amount. I was told it does not make any diffence how many claims you have either. So thanks for the responses people and keep the shiny side up always.

An extended warranty is only as good as the guy who sells it to you. You give him your cash today and hope he will:

a) Stay in business
b) Honor your warranty claims without nitpicking legalese about exclusions
c) Not disqualify you for doing your own service.

If you really trust the guy maybe.........My $.02 says they suck. I have had 2 one on a car and one on a boat. I'll never buy one again.

Extended warranties are big profit makers for the stealers and dealers and stores who sell them on almost anything you buy. Very few people benefit from them and most are a waste of money. There have been many articles on this topic, especially in Consumer Reports. I was offered everything they could throw at me when I bought my bike and turned them all down, and then they started lowering the prices and I still turned them all down. By the way you can buy the extended warranty all the way up to the last day that you are covered under the normal 2 year unlimited miles warranty when you purchased your bike. I'll see how it goes for the next 19 months but I doubt that I will even buy it then unless I have a lot of problems. You will always find a few people who have had problems that were covered under the extended warranty but most spent more on the warranty then they would have if they just paid for the repairs.

I knew that I would be modifying mine enough to void the warranty anyway so I decided against it well beforehand. If you plan to keep your bike mostly stock with standard add-ons like intake, pipes and chrome, it should be a consideration.

I would have been an nut not to. My dealer offered me a plan for $2k that consisted of an extra year on the warranty (with a $50 deductible) plus unlimited maintenance for 3 years including the cost of oil/filters and up to 2 new batteries. I've had it a year and already had 5 scheduled services done on it....I've used over half the cost of the plan just in that alone. When you add in the fact that having it dealer serviced for everything it retains better value. More than worth the money.
