For me, Harley's are the '57 Chevy, the '69 Z-28, the '66 Mustang, the '70 Cuda, etc. etc. of the motorcycle world. There may be faster makes, more reliable makes (not by much though), and more technology available with other brands but I'd still take a fully restored, mint muscle car over a brand new Porsche anyday.
Also:
--Easy to work on
--Parts and accessories catalog second to none
--A company that is an icon throughout the world
--Very reliable and road worthy...wouldn't be afraid to jump on mine and head for any destination
You can buy a perfect diamond...of course its just a copy of an original. It may be cheaper, may have no flaws, but it is still a copy. A stock harley is not slow, it handles just great, there is a huge aftermarket, great dealer support, great resale value, and you do not have to appoligize for owning a copy. I get so tired of the " I woulda got a Harley, but...." I do not really care what you ride they are for the most part all good rides. You buy what you like. I like Harleys. VTwins rock, not because of performance, but that sound is just too cool. Some people buy Fords because their dad was a Ford man, mine was a Harley guy.
They're not the fastest..............Faster then What??????????
They're not the most reliable.......Not True!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They're not the nimblest..........Nimbler then What??????????
They're not totaly "American Made"...........I like the Australian parts too......
They're definately not the cheapest.......You get what you pay for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just have to ask this... I have loved Harley since I was a kid (long time ago). I see so many non Harley riders bash, compare and complain about Harley bikes and riders that I just gotta ask what your reasons are.
Compared to some others...
They're not the fastest.
They're not the most reliable.
They're not the nimblest.
They're not totaly "American Made".
They're definately not the cheapest...
It was the one that fit my butt and my riding style the best.
I actually tried alot of bikes -- for the cc's, balance, and weight I wanted the Harley fit the bill. Many of the other bikes (excluding Victory) had higher seat heights and more weight then the bike I chose with approximately the same or a bit better cc's. What I didn't care about was the vroom factor with the exception of having to keep up with hubby and being comfortable at speeds of 70 to 80 on the highways.
Hubby rides VTX 1800 Retro, big, prowerful, and very pretty -- He actually prefers it over the Harley right now. Later he is considering an Electra Glide but would like to see the bigger bores become more standard.
I also looked at Victory. Light weight bikes with lots of HP, balances a bit to the left (engine offset).
Was a tad worried about reliability because they are fairly new to market and availability of parts/service on the road.
I have always loved Harley's . Although most of my life I couldn't afford one. I love everything about them. Though , I won't look down on any person riding his choice of bike. Which brings me to the other thing I like about owning a Harley. And that would be... the way people say you have lost your mind because of all the chrome goodies you put on your bike...while they are leaning on the nice new chrome brushguard on their 4-wheel drive. Or , you must think you are bad with those leathers , While they wipe the dudst off that nice new $300.00 pair of cowboy boots. Or why do you need that piece of chrome ...hey how do ya like the new mags on my truck....
Sooooo I just smile and crank up and ride away , knowing they are only a few who really understand.
