Because I have a small weiner and I'm overcompensating.

Or maybe I just like the way the motor revs like an old V8 and despite being a modern machine still looks like something from my childhood. And how everything visible seems to have a purpose and isn't just some chromed plastic cover hiding wires or plumbing or imitating an air cleaner. It just looks and feels real.

ORIGINAL: Axholio

I just have to ask this... I have loved Harley since I was a kid (long time ago). I see so many non Harley riders bash, compare and complain about Harley bikes and riders that I just gotta ask what your reasons are.

Compared to some others...

They're not the fastest.
They're not the most reliable.
They're not the nimblest.
They're not totaly "American Made".
They're definately not the cheapest...

So, why did you want a Harley?
Like you Axholio, I have loved Harleys since I was kid. Although my father didn't ride, one of my uncles did and I was exposed to Harley talk of some kind since the early 50's. The way I see it, if Harleys were so inferier why does every one of the Jap builders have a so called copy. Although there was times in the 70's I rode Hondas and Yamahas because of affordability but just kept plugging along untill I could get a Harley. I ride a Harley because its American.

Why do I own a Harley?? it was either that or a Triumph or BSA back in the late 50s..in between then and now I have had other bikes, but I came back to harleys. in my BMW rideing days everybody said I looked like a Harley rider that stole a BMW? [sm=WTFsgign.gif] Also tried a new Triumph, but just sold that and bought another Harley. now have a Dresser and a Dyna

Ya want to know what I think?? Of course not but I'll tell you anyway A lot of people buy harleys because they remember seeing people rideing back in the old days that were real riders and real wrenchs, they had to be able to work on them, I mean tear down and rebuild it if need be, cause we had no money..so they get up a little in age and decide OK, its my turn now, but you know what, even though they now own a harley, they are not real Harley riders, because they haven't paid the dues, see them every bike night, I'm not speaking of the younger guys, heck they have to start someplace, more power to them, its the older yo-yo that didn't buy his first harley untill he was in his 50s, sews a HOG Patch on his leather vest and thinks, ahh, I'm a Harley rider now.. Thats what I think!! and we all know everybody thinks different, thank God for that.[sm=biker.gif]

I have been a motorcycle rider since I was a teenager and that was a long time ago. I had owned 35 different motorcycle in my lifetime up to about 18 months ago. I had just sold no. 35 (a KTM LC4 640cc) and was thinking of buying a very small putt-putt just to have 'something'. I had never even contemplated owning a Harley to that point. I did know that I loved the sound of the H-D twin engine. I was driving on a Las Vegas surface street when a young lady passed me on her XL 883 C. I thought to myself, "self, that looks like fun, I need to try one of those before I quit riding motorcycles". I stopped in at a nearby H-D dealer and I purchased my XL 883 C the next day. I found that it was fun, but the 883 wasn't the bike for me. I then purchased an XL 1200 R and thought that I had purchased my last and best for me Harley. My wife tried to ride the 883, but wasn't comfortable as a driver. She tried to ride behind me on both the 883 and the 1200. She wasn't comfortable as a passenger on either. That led to our latest purchase......a '05 Road King Classic. Now, much to my surprise, she is satisfied as the passenger and I am satisfied as the rider. We love to ride together and I love to ride solo on both the 1200 R Sportster and/or the Road King Classic. I intend to sell the 883 Sportster in the near future.

I guess to sum up the above as an answer to this thread's question would be to say that the Harley-Davidson's we own are providing a lot of "FUN" in our lives and we intend to continue to ride Harleys well into our 'old age'. .............. BC

I think the analogy of comparing it to driving a '57 Chevy is a good one. Yep, I could buy a faster bike. Yep, I could buy a cheaper bike. Yep, I could do lots of things that can be logically more sensible. Harley has the sound, the look, the feel, the history, the name, the support, the quality....

I was a Kawasaki rider for years. Before that, I rode Hondas. Sorry, but there is no comparison to the feel of a solid cruiser made by Harley. It's still a classic. Money well spent, makes me happy.

Always wanted one since I started riding in 1974. SO glad I spent $20,000 on a bike that moco won't warranty all the things that have gone wrong in my 2 months of ownership. Defective seat that has staples digging into the rear fender, clutch chatter in first gear, rear head pipe glowing red hot, cold start up problems (coughing and stalling), pinging in hot weather, steers to the left when letting go of the bars, it's a road glide so my windshield has scratches in the bottom of the windshield from the ill fitting fairing not to mention the gasket curling back from the fairing (road glide owners know what I'm talking about), yea I'm glad Im a harley owner. Flame me all you want but this is the last harley I'll ever own. And the icing on the cake is - moco could care less.
