thanks for the replies. I'm pretty confident it's a muscle thing and nothing serious, and the biggest reason seems to be that crappy helmet. I just put the FF on and it doesn't even touch under my chin - may have to go back to that - or try a new 3/4 or something.
Another side to that whole issue (best suggestion I've heard is try a different helmet to get a better fit) is what is really going on with your neck. Get it checked thoroughly.
All through 2005 and the first part of 2006, every time I rode my neck would get sore, throat scratchy. It happened with the same helmet that the year before never caused me any problems. Doc said at first it was swollen glands, probably an infection. It was an infection all right; squamous cell carcinoma.
I lost half of my jaw, had the fibula removed from my left leg to rebuild it, skin grafts all over the place to fill in the holes. Then raidiation. Get the neck thing checked out
If your half helmet has one of those snap-on visors then 86 that damn thing. Mine was just a wind catcher and jerked my head around making my neck and chin sore.
So for the record, the neck problem really was a muscle thing due to my Harley half-helmet. That piece of crap will never be worn again. I wore my fullface again and have no problems, I forgot how much it cuts through the air at motorway speeds.
I've always worn a half helmet (well since I moved to NC that is) and where it was a little uncomfortable in the beginning I never had the problems with the strap I've been reading on here. I have 2 half helmets, 1 DOT and 1 novelty. The novelty fits much better and get little or no lift when riding at high speeds. The DOT get some lift and is worse with the snap on visor. And like the other poster said, the visor also catches the wind and snaps your head back. Hope it's nothing serious for you.
