Any major difference between a skull cap and half shell?

Any major difference between a skull cap and half shell?
I have a half shell and a FF and have listened to some riders mention a skull cap. What if any is the difference between a half shell and a skull cap?

As jbg pointed out, the skull caps are non-dot. They also don't catch as much wind as the DOT halfers. You can also refer to the skull caps as a beanie helmet, pi$$ bucket, skid lid, peanut shell, etc. 
Usually what they use to clean up grey matter with after the fact.
