Onalaska and the LaCrosse area are definitely cool. The terrain and bluffs are beautiful. But I'm more interested in riding in northern Wisconsin.
Coming from your area, you have a great chance to ride along the northern edge of Wisconsin through Ashland County and end up in some small tourist town like Minocqua. Ashland County is cool -- you're following roads that follow the coast.
Just a suggestion -- have fun either way and ride safe.
x100 on his route. I'm from Michigan and have done the entire state of Wisk.
Ashland county is a MUST see. Bayfield is the entry point to the Apostle Islands National park. The view from the top of the hill in Bayfield is simply astounding. You can also take a ferry with your Bike over to Madeline Island and ride around the island. Definatly stop at Tom's Burned Down Bar on the Island. Then take the route down the middle of the state and back across to Minniehaha
Wow... thanks for all the replies fellas. I'll put sure to post up some pics when I get back. Looks like I have a lot to go over tonight, hopefully the plans solidify and the weather cooperates. Supposed to be cool (especially around Duluth), but otherwise good riding weather.
@Gump I'm originally from SoDak, NE corner. I miss it there... Fargo is utterly flat & windy, but it's where I call home for now.
Port Washington and Cedarburg north of Milwaukee are cool places. Here are some pics I took yesterday on a day trip to that area with the wife. The first 2 are from Port Washington, the second 2 Cedarburg. The covered bridge is just north of the Historic Cedarburg area, take Washington St North and look for the sign to turn right, about 2 miles out of town I would say.
cut straight across thru superior then along the south side of lake superior and go all the way to sault ste marie then up across the north side of lake superior thru thunder bay and all that.
total ride is around 30-35 hours. with me, i luv riding and so 10+ hours a day is nothing. i have not done that ride but have driven it numerous times. actually never circle it like that but have cut across the bottom and across the top. i go to cloquet MN (near duluth) a couple times a year and so take different routes. from chicago along the north side is not a direct route but definitley cool.
one issue would be a passport in canada - not sure, but i am thinking that you need one now.
if you decide not to do that, a short ride up the northern cost from duluth is defintely nice also and might be worth it, but you would have to back track.
following the river south from duluth can be a nice ride also
Lumberjack Steakhouse and Lodging, Hayward Wi. My brother owns it, outstanding food, excellent bar and clean, fair priced rooms. Great starting point to a lot of nortwoods destinations. lumberjacksteakhouse.com
Pretty laid back place
A stop in Duluth at Canal Park is worthwhile. You can take hwy 13 just south of Superior along the south shore of lake Superior. Lots of open country on the way to Bayfield. Bayfield is awesome as are parts of Ashland County. Perhaps try a route south from Bayfield to Ashland on hwy 13 to Mellen and take hwy GG to Clam Lake and the 77 to Hayward. From Hayward, via hwys 63 and 53 LaCrosse is about 190 miles south. If you want to take and do the Kickapoo valley you need to get down to Tomah to pick up hwy 131 and run that south and then back north along the mississippi to to LaCrosse on 35. Lots of options, Enjoy!
Taking in all the great suggestions. I'm over in the Green Bay area and planning a 3 day run down to Lacrosse up to Ashland County and through the northwoods back home.
There have been lots of suggestions on which road to take. What I am suggesting is that you make sure that you visit Doc's Harley Davidson Dealership. It is quite a trip, I have visited quite a few Dealerships, but I have never seen one like this one.
