Agreed. I was with a group of 200 yesterday for about 4 hours. I don't think I will do it again. It was OK at first, but I would sooner go where I want to go. And I got to follow some guy riding a Honda with loud pipes. It sounded like chit. At least it was for charity.
I pretty much avoid riding in groups, being on 2 wheels is dangerous enough, I don't need someone else in my space limiting my options. FWIW, dont worry yourself about what other people wear either.
Regardless of the type of bike that someone rides. , they need to know the traffic laws. You can not stop traffic if they have the right of way. You are itching for a ticket if you do. This has very little to do with riding in a Group, it is knowing the rules of the road. Unless you have the Sheriff's department stopping the traffic, if they have the right of way, you need to let them go. At the 4 way stop, all the riders should stop (Does not have to be a dead Stop) if you can not see any traffic coming your way. at the sign before proceeding through the intersection.
I rode with a MC for a lot of years. We always had flankers blocking traffic.. everywhere we went. Not one time did any police write us a ticket. Hell we have even blocked police cars sitting at a light before.. You have 50+ bikes going, and every single bike has to stop at the lights, and stop signs ...you get scattered out,... actually causes more problems.
Riding in large groups takes skill, and knowledge, it's not nearly as relaxing of a ride as riding by yourself. It can be a rush though when 150 bikes all fire up and run 2X2 down the road .
If your in a small group blocking traffic is really not necessary though.
Yep , that's exactly why I stay away from group riding ,
it only takes one ***-clown to make a good day of
riding a bad one !
It's hard enough to watch what's going on behind you
let alone what some dumb-*** is doing in front of you !
I usually ride with my normal buddies and we are all pretty accustom to each other's habits and style so we know what to look for and do. But when I have a new rider in the group, they get a long run down on what to do and if need be I'll let them know what they are doing wrong at the next stop.
If they are really bad we'll dismiss them from the group and tell them to head home, not going to let one person ruin a ride for the rest of us.
I've never ridden with a group big enough for corking or blocking that didn't have police escort.
Toasted Goat is right. With very large groups, it's safer to block traffic so everyone stays in the group. I prefer to ride alone but when I do ride with others it's usually with 6 or less. I went on a 10 hour run a few weeks ago with 3 guys I know but never rode with before. No one tried to prove anything but we weren't doggin it either....we were eating up some miles in a hurry. The first hour or so we were feeling each other out but after that we rode hard, tight and in sync. It was a beautiful thing.
I do not ride in groups, but then I do not like other people. However, I would think people who ride Honda's can rides every-bit as well as Harley riders. The way you saw him, with all his Harley gear, I see people in dealerships all decked out in the HOG gear.
This has to be the oddest post I have read here in a long time,

I don't mind riding in groups if I know the guys and have rode with them before. I also don't mind riding side by side or close at speeds less than the freeway, that's if they are guys that I really trust and they don't ride like an asshat.
The worst group ride that I have been on was a charity run sponsored by the local HOG group. HOLY ****!!! I would say a good 80% of the riders should not have been on a bike, but they did look good decked out in their all Harley/HOG costume. Plus, the local head HOG douche tried to tell me where I had to park my bike. I told him to pound sand, to put it nicely. Never again!
