Default Survived the Crash

I'm finally able to work the keyboard again after my crash on Memorial Day morning...

After changing the oil in my '05 Heritage, I was out for a relaxing morning ride. No traffic, 2 lane open road, and 55 MPH speed limit. I entered a turn to the left at 45-50 MPH and notice a bad thing. There was gravel strewn in my lane and rapidly approaching. I tried to avoid the worst of it, but my efforts were in vain as the bike lost traction, departing the roadway on the outside of the turn with me being thrown high side.

My first points of impact were my right shoulder and the back of my helmet. The helmet did it's job and all is well there, however I broke my right collar bone and four ribs. Additionally, I was only wearing a T-shirt so I picked up a healthy serving of road rash. The mending is going well, but reports are my Heritage will most likely be totaled. We'll get final word next week.

Lessons learned? 1) Dumping a bike at 45-50 MPH really sucks!! 2) I will always wear a helmet. I don't care it you elect to ride without a helmet, but after looking at how mine protected me, I'll always wear one. 3) I remember looking at my First Gear mesh riding jacket before leaving the house and thought, "I don't need it because it is such a beautiful day with light traffic... What can go wrong?" I will always wear a jacket in the future. 4) At 43, I'm not 10' tall and bullet proof anymore. Ouchies take longer to mend than when I was 20. 5) Lastly, gravel sucks... I am a cautious and calculating rider. I have been through this turn before and never seen gravel kicked up onto the roadway. Unfortunately, there is a slight rise just prior to the turn which limits visibility. I was unable to see the gravel in time to pick a path around it.

I'm just thankful I'm not too broken to mend and for the people who stopped to render assistance. Hopefully I'll be able to ride again soon to "get back on that horse".

I'm glad to hear you're mending nicely after your unfortunate incident but sad that the lessons learned were learned the hard way. Best wishes for a rapid recovery and getting back in the saddle as soon as possible.

Yeah, I just "got back on the horse" two days ago. I wrecked my bike on May 3rd, when a car pulled out in front of me. I was doing around 40, but somehow managed not to hit the car (or anything else) after I flew off the bike. Basicaly I just ended up with a lot of road rash. ( I also was wearing a t-shirt, and no jacket) For me, getting back on the horse feels great. Any time without my Harley just sucks. Hope to see you back out there soon.
