Why does old fork oil stink?

Default Why does old fork oil stink?

I mean really bad. It can ruin the garage for a couple days.

The forks are made my Showa and supposedly the oil they use is fish oil.

Maybe it's not the oil but your fingers that you smell.

Its made of fish oil.

Oh man, fish oil. We used to work on big capacitors at Honeywell filled with that stuff. Every once in a while one would be installed backwards and blow when powered up. Building evacuation time when that happened. That's a stink right from hell.

Interesting....we use cutting oil here in my shop and after a few months it smells rancid. I thought it was the sulphur in the oil.

When I was a firefighter we used to use triple A foam for oil and gas fires. . It mas made of fish guts and such. I think it was pasturized but boy could it stink, Especially when it got old. You didn't want to get it on your bunkers!

I just thought that anything wet and slippery that has a constant in / out motion would smell after a while.
I learn something every day.

I figure it smells that bad to remind you to change it in the first place. At least that's the way it works with my mountain bike forks.
