I do both, old habit from an old sportster that you couldn't downshift more than one or two gears if you kept the clutch in, some weird thing probibly. I like to be in gear with the clutch out for a quick getaway!
I've had a couple of bikes that did the same thing...
I "tap" the brakes, just to let the person behind me know what is going on, then I start downshifting. If I have to slow down fast, of course, I get on the brakes at the same time. Otherwise, I use the motor.
Only time I downshift is under hard deceleration, other than that is just like pocoj stated, clutch in and start tapping down on gears when almost near a stop.
[sm=smiley20.gif] I'm the same way- braking, clutch in, appropriate gear selected for the speed I'm at, then... pop the clutch and NAIL IT! If I'm on my RMX though, it just comes natural to downshift every gear, (in the dirt), and shift like my hog when on the streets. I think it all comes down to not wanting that back tire to break traction when on the street![sm=gears.gif]
