Default raingear

Gonna sound weird but check out wally world. Last year was heading out for a weekend rally at the beach this time of year. My wife didn't have any rain gear and it was pouring. So, it was either buy her some gear or cancel the weekend. Went over to Walmart and had to do some searching, as this is not the time of year to be stocking rain gear, but I finally found some nice nylon gear (jacket & pants) made by Stearns (check the camping section) that I like better than my gear. Doesn't have the heat sheilds so you'll have to be careful, but it was on "clearance". Only paid $40 for the set and my wife loves it and it kept her dry through 2 hours of non-stop rain. I definitely would get a set of gaiters if you have any type of laces on your riding boots (trust me, water sloshing back and forth in your boots SUCKS!). I just bought a pair from a company called Exigent and they come highly recommended. you can google them or if your on the east coast they are at alot of the big rallies.

Mavrick, we have quality custom made leathers. Cow not lamb, its tough stuff, and except when we experienced the record breaking rainstorms in a Florida tour several years ago, we just hang'em up at night and we're dry by morning. On THAT trip, (week of pouring rain) the leathers were quite wet on the outside but kept us dry on the inside. We did have a problem with the zippers. They were so wet for so long we had to buy a candle to rub on them. I'm sure we raised some eyebrows: two soaking wet bikers walking through a Walmart buying...... a candle? We clean them with saddle soap, and treat them with water proofing (ie mink oil) once a year.

Hey Biker O, thanks for the info.. I sort of guessed your ridin' gear wasn't off the shelf..

I thought about the FXRG suit too.. and who knows, we may still go that way at some point in the future..

And definitely looking on ebay is a great idea.. you can also shop on line and get HD brand gear at discounted prices... try it on locally to get the size right, then buy online..

cheers

Waterproof jacket with front / back vents and removable liner. No need to carry an extra rain jacket.
Waterproof gauntlet gloves. Make sure the gauntlet is long enough to seal over your sleeve.
Rain pants with suspenders, side zippers and stirrups.
Mink oil on the leather boots has worked so far.
Waterproof & Windproof neck gator. This also helps when the rain stops and it's just cold.

I just got a great deal on Frogg Togg's Road Toad at bass pro shop for $45. Everywhere else they were listed for no less than $75. I have only wore the suit once but it wasn't raining per se. The streets were wet and it was misting. That being said, I also have a First Gear Thermo Jacket. I usually have it with me when the temps dip below 50 degrees. I find that I need to wear another sweater or flannel under it to stay warm. Even then I can feel drafts. The day I wore the frogg toggs it was about 50 degrees outside and misting. I went ahead and wore my flannel jacket under the frogg toggs and I believe that I was more comfortable than I would have been with my First Gear jacket on.
As I am writing this post, it is currently raining and I will have to ride home in it when I get off work at 6am. According to the weather.com, there is a 80% chance that it will still be raining then. Beings that I don't have any windshield or farring, we will see how it holds up to 70+ mph and rain!

Last year I rode up to Duluth. We road in heavy rain for six hours. I wore a HD rain suit I had purchased for the trip. I love that suit. Very well designed, comfortable and durable. However I was miserable because my feet and hands got soaked. Don't forget your feet and hands. By the time we got to Duluth my hands were frozen and my feet had me completely chilled. Since then I have gotten boot covers from HD and Rain covers for my gloves from AeroStich. Now I am comfortable in any rain.

My solution to the wet feet issue was a pait of Gore-Tex boots. I rode 10 hours in the rain from the Harley 100th Celebration and my socks and feet were bone dry.

If the leather is coated with some of Doc Bailey's preservative it will not get totally saturated,

Gore-Tex is well worth the extra cost in any type of rain gear,

I just went by Bass Pro and picked up some Road Toads too….mine were $49.99. I’ve got a trip planned next week and there is a hint of rain in the forecast. I hope I don’t need it, but I’ll be glad I have some sort of protection in the least – even if it’s not the very best.

I may try to find some of that ironing board material and make me one of those home made heat shields.
