I had a detachable one put on my bike when I bought it. I've tried three different lengths, recurves and wind wings. I get buffeting so bad it makes my vision blurry. I prefer the ride without it. It has nothing to do with looks.
I fought it for years. After a 12-hour highway trip, I figured I'd give a windshield a try. I got a Windvest, and I've gotta say, I'm a fool for not getting it sooner. I can ride in the rain without having it feel like needles hitting me in the face. I can ride in the cold weather much more comfortably. I don't avoid the highway anymore.
I still take the shield off if I'm not planning any highway riding, but for my daily commute, as well as any road trip, it's paid for itself.
If ya like the windshield, you ought to try one thats attached to a fairing, bigger difference yet. Realize these only happen on bagger for the most part but thats even more of a diff.
Rode for a few months with the watery eyes thing, that was enough and put one on myself. Mine comes up just to my mouth so I can see over it. I like it a lot.

They ain't the prettiest things, but oh what a difference when you ride every day! I got over the looking "cool" part a long time ago.
