Hi All,
Thanks for reading this post. I'm a new rider, and I've noticed that my 2001 XL1200s always smells like gas after running. There aren't any visible leaks, and I'm wondering if it's natural in general for motorcycles to smell like gas. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Had the same bike and it did the same thing. Occasionally in very hot weather, the float in the carb would stick and it would leak gas on the ground. Got into a habit of closing the fuel valve when I shut off the bike.
BTW, I have a service manual for the bike if you are interested.
Cool, thanks all for the replies. Sounds like I shouldn't worry too much about the smell. I'll just make sure I take the car if I'm going somewhere where I don't want to smell like gas!
Just a hunch, when you shutdown the bike, the valve train (intakes) may push the fuel vapors back out the intake manifold into the air filter housing. Whereas the injectors just close. If you have an open filter sometimes you might hear the valves pushing air, jut makes a funny pffsstt sound. Both of my bikes do this.
Dear All,
I should probably mentioned, the fuel smell is strong enough that my jeans smell like gas and if I go inside anywhere people notice the smell right away. Does that seem typical for a 2001 Sportster?
Thanks!
