There really is no good excuse. The best thing to do is to be friendly and pretend as if you were not intentionally speeding.

"I'm sorry, I'm just not sure how fast I was going...I was thinking about (someting) and mind wandered a bit."

The speedo bit might get you written up for an equipment violation.

Pretty sure they have heard all the excuses. I'm just honest, even admitting some fault (especially when it's obvious that I screwed up and he saw me). It usually doesn't work, but every now and then you get a break.

Yes officer, I was speeding. How fast? I don't know, I don't like to take my eyes off the road while riding.

Being polite and friendly works with me ninety-nine percent of the time. I'm not big on writing tickets but if someone is hostile towards me or has a serious attitude problem they'll get a ticket every time.

There are too many cops on here to voice my excuses. They won't work anymore if all the cops know them.

+1

Smile, tell the cop you were just being a bone head, ask him if he rides. If he doesn't, tell him what he's missing and how much fun it is to forget about a stressful job and just ride! Never argue, acknowlege whatever he says and change the subject.

20 years on the job...8 more to go until I can grow my beard and find a normal job. Bikers get the most breaks...attitudes get none...I'm doing a job....and not always enjoying it. It's nice to meet friendly people who understand that once in a while.
