How does consignment work?
I'm going through a divorce, and in order to get a decent house I need to sell off my Harley. It is a 2009 Ultra Classic Electra Glide w/ABS and 3k miles, so I know I can get around 21K for it.
With dealer consignment, how much a chunk do they take of the sale, and do you have to buy a bike in return or just pay them a "seller's fee" and take the cash leftover from the sale after their cut???
It is in my avatar picture.

You may be shocked at what used Harleys are selling for now, 21k may be out of the picture, that is not a criticism of your bike just the state of used bikes right now. As far as consignment each shop has its own deal, most HD dealers will not take a used bike unless you are trading it for a new one and they would choke to death before they would give anyone a check for a bike, they would take yours sell you a new one and want more money. A independent shop would be most likely you best bet for want you want, I used one once and it worked well ,they have the foot traffic , I didn't have to put up with the stupid phone calls, the no shows, the tire kickers,or the scam artists. Can't remember what their cut was but it sold in less than a month. Good luck with the sale!
Greetings,
The way it works around my neck of the woods is that you and the dealer will agree to a set price. Then, the dealer will list it for more money and keep the difference between the actual sale price and what you and the dealer agreed to. You don't have to buy another bike or anything like that.

I wouldn't get to attatched to that 21K number. You can buy a leftover 09 Ultra brand new for less than that at this time of the year. I'm not trying to add any misery to your already bad situation, but you need to be realistic about what to expect. You can't expect someone to pay the same price or more for a used Ultra than they'd pay for a new leftover. I wish you luck but I think you're going to be disappointed.
Yah I was looking at used bike ads and $21K is steep. I owe $17k on the bike, so if I could get $19K for it I'd be happy. The dealers in Tulsa sell news ones like mine for $23K OTD, everyone rides a Harley in Oklahoma so bikes go off their showroom floor pretty quick. I may deal with the payments and wait till summer hits and bike fever kicks back in.

Pretty much, what Jason said, is also how it works 'round here.
I just sold an 02 Deuce for a family friend on Wednesday. She wanted to get out from under the payments, same as you, to get a house.
8600 miles, IMMACULATE, ............................... $8500
Sold it to the 2nd guy, I called.
My cut??? A Porterhouse dinner, at the Grand Grill, in the casino here.
(That's where she works.)
Sorry to hear 'bout the "mess".
GOOD LUCK going forward from here !!!!
