Took my wife on our first bike trip. Everything was going fine and I guess that I shouldn't complain. We stopped at a HD dealership to look over the stock and pick up a T shirt. While there we were doing some looking over the map to determine our next destination. We started the trip with no plans except to ride and have a good time. Well anyway back to the story......while talking with our riding partners I got my 700.00 digital camera out of the saddle bag and set it on top of the bag while doing some other stuff. Long story shortend...........I left it on the saddlebag and pulled out of the parking lot. While leaving the parking lot there was another couple standing by thier car kind of watching us leave. The camera slide off my saddlebag, I believe while I was just in the parking lot. I could think that I dropped it on the road but, recalling how it was sitting on my bag and the large size of the parking lot would leave me to believe that it had to drop in the lot. If it had dropped on the road I would have noticed as I was watching some of the traffic on the road with my mirror. Anyway, I got about a half mile down the road and realize that I didn't stow the camera. I turned around and returned to the lot with no camera in sight. The couple that was in the lot at the time had also left. I went inside and told the staff about the incident. They knew the guy who had been in the lot and said that they would call him. I left my telephone number with the staff. Several days later I called the dealership to no avail. No camera found, the guy in the lot said he didn't have it. I find it hard to believe that he doesn't have the camera. I can't prove a thing about him having it or not. The only thing I can prove is that I am an idiot for not remembering to store the camera back in the saddlebag. Lesson learned.....check things over before riding off.........
Sorry for your loss but I must say you are doing a lot of assuming here. I know it's human nature to be suspicous but I leave parking lots all the time with people standing by their car looking at me (and others) leaving, they like watching the rumble of a Harley go on it's way. That doesn't make them potential thieves.
Especially after the store called them. Do you really think they would lie when the store knows them?
Chalk it up to lesson learned but try to have faith in others, there are more good apples than bad ones.
man, that is super uncool. i thought that i would have been able to trust a harley brother to to the right thing. guess not everyone is as honest as i would like people to be
If you could re-enact the event by putting a similar (inexpensive) object on the bike and go through the actions of riding out of the parking lot to see where the camera might have fallen off. Run the experiment several times and it might give you a clue where the camera actually ended up.
I had a friend who lost his cell phone in a wreck and he spent hours looking through the weeds for it. I suggested that he call the cell phone number and follow the sound. Dumb look from him, but he did it and found his phone.

I have already admitted that it was my fault for leaving the camera on my saddlebag. I do have faith that most people are good people and would do the right thing. Having said that, when looking at the time frame as to how things happened and I am only talking about a very short period of time. The store told me that no one else had either come or gone. This guy was the only other person in the parking lot. I know that I am assuming that he "found" it. Usually the simplest answer is the correct answer.
I don't hold a grudge, I am just disappointed both in myself and whoever found the camera. A couple of lessons learned here. I should be happy that the rest of the trip went well. This isn't the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe I shouldn't have even posted it. I guess I was just venting a little.
a LONG time ago, i was riding my 93 GSXR (with alot of friends) when we stopped at a bar in New Hope, PA. at the time- New Hope was THE SPOT to ride (excellent roads, no cops, good people) and it was pretty much only motorcycles in the town. well- i used to keep my 'stuff' under the seat and when we stopped- i would retrieve my 'stuff'. we parked, went into the bar- had a couple coldies and some food... then the bill came. yup- i left my freakin wallet on my seat!
i went out and was PISSED... oddly- there were a bunch of guys who were sitting outside. one of them grabbed my wallet and held on to it.... when he saw how mad i was, i yelled to me and tossed me my wallet... still full of the money and credit cards.
