I was coming home from work a couple days ago when suddenly a cloud of smoke rolled over me. I looked down on the right side and there was oil blowing back over the pipes. Just as I reached to shut the engine off I heard the lifters start to clatter. I coasted to a stop and got off to see where the oil had come from.
The line from the oil pump to the filter had blown off, dumping nearly all the oil on the pipes, frame, engine, bags, and me. The hose clamp was toast. It's kind of awkward to get at, and I guess I over-tightened it last time I checked the bike over. I called THE MAMA and got her check my shop and bring whatever oil she could find that had "50" in the name. Ended up with 2 quarts of Mobil 1 15w-50 red cap, 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50, and 1/2 quart of some Valvoline 50 wt.
Slipped the line back on with a clamp from a vent line, dumped in the oil, and turned the bike over without starting it to pump some oil into the lines and motor. Then I turned the ignition on, fired the beastie up, and listened for things to shake, rattle, whine, grind, and otherwise ruin my day. But all was well, and it didn't make any more weird noises than usual. Yessss.... Life is GOOD!!!!
Except now I'm paranoid about those dang little hose clamps and am gonna change 'em all out. And I'm still burning the oil outta the exhaust wrap. Looks pretty wild at a stop light, smoke rolling up and curling around me.
