Default Cam work

I'd like to do some cam work on my 2001 Heritage. Its running the little 1450 motor.

What are you guys paying for JUST your cam work? I'm thinkin the biggest cam i go without having to do spring and head work. I'm not sure exactly which cam that is or which brand ,,, in fact i dont know anything except a guy that has done a few of my buddies.

I was thinkin about calling him he gave me his # but Id like to educate myself on this a little
as far as Type of cam options and costs associated. I'm not really worried that he will rip me off ,,a couple guys have said this guy is fair. I just wanna know myself. Honestly I dont know if I am lookin at $1000.00 or $5000 or what. I havent asked anybody.except you.

Usually when i just open my wallet and let somebody pick out of it I dont end up w/ exactly what i want and I end up paying alot more than I should have. I'm getting alot mor funny about how i spend money after this past year. No more stupid throwing money around.

Also ,, since money is a concern......... maybe I can start buying parts now,, once I assemble all the parts than call this guy? Anybody done that? If so any suggestions? Links w/ kits or seperate parts? Maybe if i go this route I'll just work on springs and heads also... but i wouldnt have a freakin clue w/o this guys help. Or yours. Good way to monitor cost without getting into something i cant quit 1/2 way through you know what I mean?

Any advise,,suggestions,, tips ,, what ever is appreciated in advance.

if your bike is stock, there's a few things you can do cheaper then doing cams and might make you happy. Change your exhaust and breather, then get it tuned. should pick up a couple of hp, plus the sound will give the impression your going faster. If that don't work ride next to a guy who has spent lots of $$$ on his bike then ask yourself, whats he doing differently then I am ?.And is being able to go fast up to 100mph really that important? And if it is, how often will you really do it?. As you can tell I feel it's money wasted if you have a dependable bike, and your not going to race it every time you ride it.,,

Cam swap will run you about 4 hrs labor (at whatever the shop rate is). How many miles on the bike? You may need to replace your tensioners. If that's the case, they may try to get you to consider going to gear driven cams (gears alone run approx $400), OR upgrading to HD's new Hydraulic tensioner set-up (not sure about the exact price). You may re-post this in the Engine Thread. You'll get some good gear-head responses there.

New cams usually want new lifters at the same time, so add that in.

Does the bike have fuel injection? Figure on a Power Commander or some such for fuel management.

Content to load a canned map? If not figure a dyno tune into your equation.

Are they pulling the heads? If not, figure for adjustable pushrods and new pushrod covers.

It really adds up quick.

I am a firm beliver in gear drive cams on pre 06 bikes. Cheap peice of mind. I have had my idie put in g. drives on two of my bikes for around $800.00 total. A good cam fpr your motor is the Andrews/S&S .510.
If your bike is a carb model, a Mikuni 42 carb will give you as much and maybe more than a cam for less money. If it's a EFI, you won't get that cool idel even with a set of cams. Regardless, don't go too radical on an other wise stock motor.

Cams, gear drive, oil pump, and adjustable push rods. 1700 dollars approximately drive out. It took him three days---it would have taken me two weeks between work and home. SERT so I could tune it approximately 300 or 400 dollars-----not sure anymore of the cost on the sert.
