Default New guy question :)

So I just got my first bike and plan on doing a lot of practice time in and as I get more comfortable, I'll expand. Playing it safe is never a bad thing. I ended up getting a 2006 Sportster 1200L with 4100 miles.

A question I had though was , what are some necessities you think I "need" to be carrying along with me or have at the house?

Some thoughts I had were things like

- Tire Gague (given)
- Mini Tool kit
- Battery Charger (is it needed?)
- etc etc

I'd like to get a feel for what some of you carry or have that you consider necessities?

Knife, stick and a rock. Ok, that's crude but it works. I carry black tape, leatherman{priceless} couple feet elec. wire, small crescant wrench, and a multitool kit. This all fits in my leather coat inside pocket. But Hey, you got a newer bike so you shouldn't have to worry. Best thing is check her out before you go on a ride. I've spent many a year on the road, I ride alone and love it. I take care of my girl and she takes care of me,{unless I talk nice about her} then she plaques me to no end, bitch} sorry, I digress again, seem to do that alot, but It's all good. Feel free to ask anything you want. cole

+1...do a thorough checklist before taking her out...first time will take you a half hour and after two or three times, it'll take you less than 5 minutes to walk around the bike checking for things.

if it'll ease your mind carrying tools with you...get a tool pouch to attach to your forks and throw a basic socket set in there, a flathead and phillips screwdriver, and maybe a set of needlenose?

Depends on whether you have bags or not and if you are packing for short hops or wish to keep gear and tools for a longer ride.

Since I have bags and a windshield bag and often drive to a 75 m RT to work, I carry a lot more than I would if I was just spinning around the block. My kit includes:

Tire repair kit and mini pump, extra bulbs, extra fuses extra gas, rain gear, spare key, phone and documents, tool kit with sockets, cable ties, flex wire, pliers and screw drivers, orange safety vest, cargo net, ear plugs, goggles and secret cash.

Cell phone on rides--------motorcycle jack and a HD repair manual specific for you bike. You already listed some things. Keep your bike maintained. I haul a few tools. I have spokes so a plug kit is as useless as teats on a boar hog.

I"m with everyone else here.. I prep the bike before I ride, especially before long and overnight trips. It's just common sense... check stuff like tire pressure, engine oil, brakes, lights... I go the bike.. once every couple weeks and definitely before long rides.

I carry "alot" but I ultra, and we do take longer rides.. so for tools I have a kit from Cruz called Road Tech.. it has pretty much everything, all the basic tools plus electrical tape, zip ties, etc.. I have a surefire led light on the bike, and I have a very basic first aid kit as well. Admittedly it's easy since my scoot has bags and a tour pak but.. with I'm sure you can get a basic kit together and use a fork bag and do just fine. Basic tools, basic first aid stuff, including sting kill swabs for bee hits and stings, and a pain reliever of some kind and your good to go. Also.. for longer trips.. a pre paid phone card is a great idea since cell coverage is never a sure thing.. and like someone else said.. a secret stash of cash isn't a bad idea..

You don't need all the stuff I carry, just for longer rides I like to have what I need and be comfy. Like I said above, just get some basic tools, a good fork bag and your set..

Cheers
