has anyone ridden or owned a bmw r1150rt on this site?
i checked out a 2004 the other day and it sure seems like a nice ride.
i just might get it to go along with my road king, price seems about right
and it sure is pretty.
I have 5 years prior working in a BMW shop and the r1150rt is a fine ride, especially 2004 with the twin spark, I have also been looking and am finding the prices to be high for most. If you getting this one at or below $7 to $7.5 k your doing good. I would caution you about the twin torqueing at just off idle, feels like it wants to go right until you get enough throttle to overcome. Still a great ride.
My friend has an 04 RT he was considering trading in. When they offered him $6,500 he declined. He told me if they'd offered $7,500 he may have done the deal. If you would be interested in his RT PM me and I'll connect you two. It's blue and he's the original owner. I believe it to be in perfect shape and not more than 30K.
I have an R1100RT (significant differences), but I think you'll find that the 04 R1150RT is really excellent. Supposedly the surging problems were cured with the twin spark, and by 2004 they did away with the "power" brakes that were overly sensitive and left you with almost no brakes with the engine off.
You'll likely find that it's very pleasant to ride a Road King one day and the BMW another. Very different machines.
I have an '04 R1150RT--great bike. I just bought an '08 Ultra Classic so my wife would be more comfortable. I've put almost 47,000 miles on the RT and it still handles like new. The BMWs are well-made machines and this particular one is easy to work on yourself and needs minimal maintenance. The only thing I won't do myself is the ABS brake-bleed--that is best left to the dealer, 'cause if you screw up the bleed process you risk damaging a $2200 ABS module / computer. The bleed needs done every two years and will run ya about $200 at a dealer--money well spent in my opinion.
My RT is up for sale if anyone is interested. PM me for more info.
I had an 04 R1150RT and it was a great bike. It did, however, have the power assist brakes that are quite touchy until you get used to them. Those (on ABS models) did not go away until 2007, I believe.
They even have an R1200GSA vs R1150GS thread in there somewhere. I like boxer motors and I hear the 1150 is a favored bike for global trips. When I retire in a couple years I'm goiong to buy a BMW and travel a couple years. I'll keep my RG though.
