At least it's good to know there are still some true American owned and operated businesses still out there.

I like the look of the Harley jackets, but my made in USA Schott Perfecto, as worn by Brando, Dean, the Ramones, etc., cost me around $250 brand new (closeout from a dealer on Ebay) and my other Schott and my woife's 2 Schotts cost even less - why would I pay $400 for a Chinese jacket that's about 1/3 the weight?

Look at Ebay - I can buy a used US made leather jacket for under $50 any day of the week and a new one for $250 or less.

Yeah it's too bad H-D doesn't make their jackets in the US anymore. Juge drop off in quality since they started producing them overseas. I have one that I got "free" when I bought a Fat Boy back in 99. Great jacket that will absolutely destroy a wire hanger if you try to hang it on one. Was looking to get a larger one that I could wear a few layers under now that I am in the NW but all the ones at the dealer I work at felt like the had about 1/3 the leather as mine. Don't really want to shell out the $$ for a Langlitz but it may have to happen.

I'm sure everyone in this thread knows this already but just in case; most overseas made jackets are made out of American leather.

Due to the processing, which is pretty much banned here, our leather gets sent out of country to be processed then comes back in bulk form or already done up in the form of jackets, chaps, vests, etc.

Call any "Made in America" place like Langlitz, Schott, or Fox Creek and ask them where they get their leather.

Moral of the story is almost all the leather we get here starts here no matter who does the sewing in between.

That's the way I understand it anyway and if someone wants to correct me then great; I'd like to see proof.

I don't remember where I got this info, but it is my understanding that the EPA banned or stopped the tanning process in the USA some time ago. We have the cows and we have sewing machines, but we can't tan the leather in this country. A "Made in USA" leather coat could simply mean it was sewn together in the USA from Chinese leather. There are so many loop holes that allow retailers to plunk a "Made in USA" label on their goods. I seriously doubt that any of the brands mentioned in this thread actually make their own leather. They probably make the TAG in the USA.

Same situation with the Chrome plating outfits. We used to have a local Chrome plating joint around here that closed decades ago due to EPA regulations.

That was the old days. Nowadays the bull humps a fake cow and the poor cowboy who picked the short straw sits in the fake cow and catches the bull's sperm. Then the cowboy spits the sperm up the cow's butt, or somewhere back there, and the next you know there's a baby cow. The technical term is calf but that's too technical for this forum.

It's all very scientific you see. Even I don't understand it all and I saw in on the farm channel ... twice.

My idea is you buy her a jacket she likes and don't worry about where it's made.
