Default You know what

I think i have 300 posts over years time and I challenge you to go back and find one thing BAD I've said about Harley bikes themselves. Perhaps you may find I do not like the way dealers are ran,, but thats it. I love my bike I couldnt imagine owning but a Harley and never will unless its my Triumph chopper I want someday.

But i just took my bike to my mechanic to get the shift shat seal replaced that started leaking last week and asked him to check my tensioners. Sure enough front shoe (3) significant chips on the surface. They gotta get replaced. 36k on the bike.

Now my mechanic works out of his garage but is still not entirely cheap but. The work he puts out is second to none and you can tell from the 7,8,9 bikes stacked in his shop everytime and his parts shelf w/ bore kits, cams, cranks, completed head work jobs ect... that he is working on and the reputaion w/ us guys he works for. THE MONEY I AM SPENDING ON THE DEFECTIVE SHOES I COULD BUY THE CAMS I WANT! This PISSES me off. The money I am spending to do the seals on the other side I could pay him to install them and more.

This is the second round he has done on my bike just to keep it tight. You cant take better care of a bike. You can eat anywhere off my 2002. But for some reason everytime my bike gets there ........... well you know the story.

THAN THEY CANT EVEN BE WHITE ABOUT IT AND CHARGE YOU REASONABLY FOR WHAT LOOKS LIKE A $2 PART.

I cringe myself knowing that it will be $80/hr any time I have to take mine in for service to the local dealer. The cost of keeping a business running is steep.

I rode Japanese junk from '68 til '01 and did not even know that motorcycles needed maintenance until I became a proud Harley owner. I always thought you just checked oil now and then, maybe mixed some in the gas, put fuel in it and rode the thing. Apparently I had been mislead, but my Harleys are straightening me out.

Just get a manual and work on it yourself. Save you alot of $ on labour.

+1.....when I checked my tensioners and found them bad, I purchased gear drive cams and put them in myself. The money I saved on labor paid for the cams. When I wanted to go 95", I didn't buy new cylinders and heads. I tore the bike down and sent them out to be bored and have the head work done. GF bought me the new pistons needed for my birthday, so I pumped up the motor for around $600, vs. dealer price of $1200-$1500.

Getting a manual and doing the work yourself can save you a lot of money!

Your right and I am.

I also dont want to sound like a hater. I can even let the shift shaft seal go,, stuff happens at least I can take care of it. I know guys that run around leaking all the time and cant. Wouldnt have been a big deal really. But toss in the tensioners,, take off the cams i want ,, and I have a big BULLSHIT bill.

If you boys started doing your own work you would feel a whole better about your machines.Of course if you don't have the knack or the patience, paying for labor should not upset you so much. The boys doing the work have to make a living.Just saying.
