Because growing up, thats all I knew. I like Harley's, Just Like I like a Good steak, A cold beer amd a pretty lady. It's my desire, that's all that matters.
Now come on you know we are all still growing up! When I stop growing I'll stop breathing.
The REAL answer should be the classic line..."If you have to ask you wouldn't understand".
Lot's of reasons.
When I was a kid in the 60's, that was what people were driving around and it looked cool to me. In 1981 I was riding a Yamaha 650 special back from Bar Harbor ( wanted to ride, all I could afford - felt like a rooshin ) and one of my buds has 70s something HD Low Rider. I am hanging on to my bike like a chipmunk in a hurricane riding a sewing machine and he, on the LR, floats up next to me like he is on cloud and says " how ya doin" with a big sheet eatin grin on his face. I said at that moment I am getting a Harley someday by fu...y. Then in 93 I bought my first and it just felt right for me.
Even though they can be an expensive pain in the azz, I love them. Hds, to me, have a certain gravity, mass and connection to my American world that I have not found on the metric bikes I have owned and ridden. To each their own, I like my HDs.
I owned a honda for 6 months. When i rode it...it was like, i dont know generic, vanilla. when i rode a harley...damn. I was riding on a freakin legend. I felt 10 ft tall, with 100 years of badass on my side. needless to say, sold the honda...for a loss, but i don't give a s***.
Nearly same story with me. Happy owner of a VTX1800 for 5 years until I rode an '07 Softail. My bike was exactly as you described:Boring,TOO sterile and competent with zero character. I took friends Softie out and didn't want to come back. Lack of power in comparison only drawback to me. Bought an 09' FB that i've only rode for about 100 feet so I'm DYING for spring to get here!!!!
I had it up for awhile as my avatar, a guy complained about a classic car on a Harley site, so I took it down
You got a sharp looking ride! GM may have not went bankrupt if they still built them with some chrome on them!
Yours too... I love the lines of the coupes. I built that car three times, lol. Finally got it to where it could get down the road pretty good. Stroker small block, muncie 4-speed, narrowed ford 9 inch, disc brakes and power steering. Engine dyno'd at 425hp/450 ft lbs. I relocated the rear springs under the frame rails and slammed the front with dropped spindles and shorter springs. Just typical hot rod stuff.
Hot rods and Harleys are a classic combination. I try to bring the same approach to my bike as I do to my hot rod.
I ride a Harley b/c it is far superior to any other brand. The sound, feel, and look are second to no other company imo....my bike is expensive but I got what I paid for....quality. I just wish I could ride everyday...it is 19 degrees in Ohio today.
Character and attitude, you feel 100+ years of movement towards the feeling of just letting it hang out and fly and be free. Jap bikes are nice to ride in all respects, but you can't tell a Yamaha from a Suzuki from a Bultaco; in working for the best handling and best accelerating bike, they all ride and feel the same, like cheap scooters with power. At least the '80's Jap bikes had some character, but now now they are all the same and they have really boring cruising characteristics. The motors feel more like an electric motor than an internal combustion engine. Harley always has and always will feel like what a real motorcycle should be. Even when I had my first Harley Sportster that leaked and shook your fillings loose, there was just an awesome feeling like you were sitting on a real bike with a real motor.
My 2˘.

The fit and finish, comfort, the nostalgic air0cooled V-twin. They are not fast and nimble, but can be made a little quicker. A more motorcycle-fullfilling overall experience (Cruiser) than the metric bikes I have owned.
