Default silver vs black engine

I am torn between an EG Standard,EG Classic and Road King Standard. I had a silver powder coat engine on my Softail Standard and was never a big fan of it. The only thing stopping me from the EG Standard is the silver engine. Is everyone happy with their silver engines and how do you keep them clean? Thanks

When I went to purchase my '06 RG I inquired about getting a black engine as an option. The answer was a resounding NO. So I went with what I thought was the best color to tie in with the silver engine, black pearl. Having put 4200 miles on the RG so far, I can tell you that is is much easier to maintain than the black, and I have both. I've done some slight clean-up here and there with a soapy brush, no bucket/hose wash in 4200mi.

I like mine, mostly because of the way it looks with my paint scheme. The black powdercoat just would not have fit as well. I have had a couple gasket seams that over a nine month period have shown oil seepage (never enough to drip, just enough for a visible mark). These are easily cleaned by spraying brake cleaner on the spot. I spray it on the bottom of the crankcase (road grime), and it comes out like new.

Have you ever seen an older black engine when the paint fades and peels? Silver holds up much better hands down.

I would rather have black on my fxst but, I guess you just get use to what you have. They black engines really look like crap after years of riging on them. One way to keep the engine clean that I use is Simple Green! Spray it on.....and rinse.

Black is my choice. I had a silver engine last time, and am very happy I have a black engine now. I just think they look better. JMO.

Black and chrome, can't beat it. My Electra Glide classic is 5 years old and the motor looks new. I have been using pledge on the black and it works very well.

The black engine is what finally nudged me in the direction of my '05 Ultra vs. the '05 Roadglide (that, and the "unique" headlights and stripes that didn't line up on the Roadglide). But that was a big factor. I just like the "pop" of the black engine and the chrome combination. Had it on my '03 Heritage, and chose it for the '05 Ultra. While I've never had any issues with the black engine looking bad or fading, it is probably because I am meticulous in taking care of it -- keeping it clean and also coating it with S100 engine spray and/or Pledge.

Silver (natural) finish engines are used on the entry level bikes for each family except 06 SE CVO bikes. Hated the CVO's because of it. Used to paint my race engines black to help get the heat out of the engines. I prefer the black and polish.
