I did my first oil change on my roadie and I reaaly went the extra mile. I drained the tranny and the primary into a container that had quanity marks in ounces. The tranny had 24 ounces in it. The PRIMARY had 44 ounces in it. Is that NORMAL. I did like the mech at Harley said. I used a flashlight and watched the bottom of the plate in the derby opening. When it got to the bottom I had 44 ounces (according to measuring cup). Thanks Terry
Let me add that the bike was serviced at the harley shop the last 4 times, the oil was changed. I KNOW the manual calls for 32 ounces. So this has me confused.
I am not sure what kind of bike you have. On a previous TC88 Road King the dealer overfilled the bike on delivery and I found about the same amount of primary fluid (44 oz) and told them never again. The manual calls for 32 oz of primary fluid for touring models. I fill through the primary chain cover and check to the bottom of the clutch plate with a strip of cardboard to let me know when the fluid gets there. It is hard to tell if you get a little high and overfill. 32 oz. has always worked for me. I ride a Street Glide now. I always change gaskets and O-rings. My tranny is good with around 22-24 oz. Also the book says upright and level.
Actually on the TC 88 (my '01 anyway) the service manual calls for 32oz in the primary as an estimate, but should be topped up while the bikes is flat and level to the bottom of the clutch diaphram spring. That may be well over 32oz. 44 seems a little on the high side but remember the fluid will expand while hot. Did you drain the primary from cold or hot? 22 - 24 in the tranny is bang on on my dipstick.
I changed from the level position (bike in a wheel chock) and the bike was cold. When I drained it I inspected the clutch and the oil was at the base of the brass plate. When I only put 32 ounces in it I wasn't even close. I watched as I toped it to the edge of the brass plate and it took 42 & 1/2 ounces, to touch the brass plate. I talked to the head mech at the stealer ship and he stated that in his experiance 32 ounces is a guide line but every bike holds anywhere from 38 to 44 ounces. he said he never stops at 32 since it isn't near the brass plate with 32 ounces.
On another note I used the RED LINE heavy duty shock oil for the tranny and the bike shifts like silk. I was quite impressed with the way it made the bike shift.

I think you are overfilling the primary. The correct level should be at the bottom edge of the clutch diaphragm spring, approx 26oz., not bottom of brass spring. Its really hard to see, but the oil should just touch the bottom of the spring. This is for my '01 Dyna, so check it out in a service manual. If your putting that much oil in I'm supprised your not having clutch engagement problems or finding neutral. Try giving Shovelhead Bob a pm and ask him.
If it's a touring model, the general concensus over in the tech section is just dump in a quart and close it up. Works for my RKC. Independant shop I use told me the same thing.
I don't even open the derby cover. 25000 miles and no issues.
And you are right about the Redline Shockproof Heavy. That is some GOOD stuff.
touring models hold 32 oz up to 44. the primary level is a lubricant bath that wets the chain which in turn spreads the lubricant over the compensator and clutch basket. You should have enough to drag the chain through without totally immersing (drowning) it. That's why the HD manual says to check the level indicator.
