I've been thinking about sewing my old Boy Scout merit badges on my coat so eveyone knows that I can weave a basket, tie a square knot, and make an arm splint. It might be cool.
I have a vest, no buttons, no pins, no patches. As a matter of fact, the only patch I respect around here are the Vet Patches, BACA Patches (Bikers Against Child Abuse), and the local ones that have a Skull with Wings, a small Rocker and an MC logo. That's about it.
Don't have many pins or patches to worry about. I ride fairly clean in that respect.
I do wear a doo rag for two reasons: 1) so the helmet doesn't smell like someones funky sweatsocks in a couple of months. 2) I'm bald. When I take my helmet off and it's sunny, the doo rag keeps my head from getting the crap burned out of it. This is good for two reasons also. 1) If you ever burn the top of your head and stand under the shower...'nuff said. 2) Go without head protection long enough with no head covering, and the cancer surgeon will be thanking you as he carves off the skin lesions that will be paying for his new cabin cruiser.
Personally, I refrain from making judgements about other people based on whether they wear pins or patches...or much anything else. I found in my youth that once I took the time to know someone, many times my impressions were often wrong. The benefit of getting older and more experienced maybe---took me long enough to figure out.
I know about those skin surgeon guys...and getting the dome burned sucks too! Then it peels and looks like an onion that has been rolling around in the bed of a truck. As far as being bald goes, my dad told me that you won't find marble on cheap furniture!
I like patches. No HD or HOG patches for me though. Mine are pretty much all PGR/pro-America related. My favorite is shown below, except the background is black.

Who really needs patches?!? [&:]
My vest shows ALR, PGR, and a little of my Air Force history (ie, a few unit PATCHES). I earned them... all!!
I wear my vest when I want, usually to meetings and ALWAYS on 'missions'.
(Hmm. Does there need to be an expansion to the 'terms and phrases'...?)
