I've had an order get lost by the good ole post office as well. It was a Xmas gift, ordered in November.. I got the package this past May. I now make sure the person I buy from ships FedEx or UPS only as part of my regimine for Ebay. They ain't perfect either, but I have heard wayyyyyy less bad things.
Luckily never scammed. Although nowadays, I think it's kinda like riding a motorcycle..
No matter what you do to protect yourself against it, there are those that have, and those that will.

i thought i got burnt a few times on ebay, but each time I eventually got my stuff. Once it took almost 3 months. The ebay auction was for a set of risers. When I did finally get them (i had already bought a new set) I checked the postmark and he had shipped it right after the auction ended. US postal service just messed around with it that long.
Another time I bought a backrest, seat and rack all in one auction. It didn't show for a month and the guy didn't answer any email. I finally got a response from him stating his email had been down and the package showed up the next day.
Hope you eventually get yours. If the guy has good feedback, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.
I always check feedbak before I bid on anything. Funniest transaction was for my Deadwood. I paid the min. and wanted him to send the title before I gave the full amt. he wanted the full amt. So we did a bank transfer (his bank got and shipped the title, mine wired the money). He was a good guy, and had good fdbk, but I was too paranoid for that $$$. This came after almost getting f'd by Screwied Louie on the east coast. His Deadwood (when the shippers arrived to pick it up) was apparently so messed up that he would not sign the damage sheet they wrote up. The paint was all scratched up and had chips in it, the chrome was bubbling. So I got my money back on that and bought the eBay one. Great bike, too.
