Hey All, last year broke my back from a fall out of tree stand, this is my third break on my back in three different areas. Though I'm 6', 200+ pounds, my back no longer has the strength to restrain or lift a full dresser, especially 2 up, and looking to downsize. I'm used to the smoothness of the Tourer and the Air Shocks, especially on our wonderful Michigan roads. Ride between 10k-15k a year, about 8k of 2up, and some 6k mile trips. I like the Softail Deluxe, easy to lift, even 2 up, but leary that on long trips the solo shock will not be comfortable on my back, what you think? The Dyna Frame and Duel Shocks looks more simular to a Tourer, I like the New Wide Glide, but are they even close to the smooth ride of the Touring Line? Appreciate your thoughts, Thanks-Red Ryder

Man... that's a bummer about your back.
As for riding comfort. I put the Platinum Air Ride Suspension on my Softail and it is the most comfortable ride I have ever had. It is even better than my Bagger that has the stock air system.
The other thing you can do if you really want the bagger. I've seen a system that has wheels that tuck under your bike and when you get to a specific speed the wheels come down and fully support the bike, then retract automatically as you speed up.

I you need any more info please send me an e-mail to tom@harleygoodies.com and I'll find them again.

Best of luck with that back.
Tom

Thanks guys, wife mentioned a trike, just not ready for one yet, only 48. The Plantinum Air Ride Suspensions looks like a Great Idea, check into it. Later-Red Ryder

When softails came out in 1984 it was said that one shock and less shock travel sacrificed ride comfort.

I have never road a tourer or a softail. My son bought an '09 nightster. We went to a demo ride last summer where I road a street bob. Road so nice.

I have sat on the softail custom at the dealer and that is one comfortable seat.

Best deal for you is go to a demo ride event an try out the bikes you think will give you the best ride verses weight.

If you can handle the Softail Deluxe, you might also consider the Heritage Softail. It comes a little better suited for touring, and considering a touring bike is what your used too it might work out better.

I think if you get a real comfortable seat you will be just fine with the ride on the softails.

First thing I'd do is quit hunting!!! JK. Seriously though, help me understand your question. Due to your back you can't lift your bike from the kickstand position up, or are you saying you couldn't pick it up if it fell over on you? I wouldn't think that lifting it from the kickstand position would be that difficult, that would mostly be your leg strength, isn't it? If it were me and I could no longer ride a two-wheeled touring bike I'd go to a trike before jumping on a dyna or any other kind of Harley and trying to obtain the same kind of ride quality, but maybe that guy above, with the platinum air suspension is onto something.
