After a little researching for good battery prices & after my second battery in 4 years dropped a cell I decided to alter my bike to accommodate a larger & more cost effective battery. I drilled a 5/8s hole on the inside of my right saddle bag to run my battery wires. Added 12 inches of wire for length & bought a John Deere lawn mower battery with 325 cold crank amps for $50 and it sits perfectly in the bottom of the bag.
Here in Canada for a good sealed battery the price was around $175. Im just not going to pay that much any more!
I treated my last 2 batteries good & kept them on a tender so Im not sure why they died!
I just went on the East Penn Deka website (who makes all the HD batteries) and found their local distributor and bought one for $79 versus the $120 at the dealer. But if your batttery is crapping out check your stator & VR.
You might also want to check local battery & tire stores. I know that I have a couple electric chairs for the handicapped (me), which would cost $185 and up from a medical supply store which I buy from bat/tire store for $50. Just sayin, there are alternative sources...

Thanks for this info,Iknow where there's a Deka distributor in Chicago !!!
Battery's are not expensive enough for me to go to the trouble of drilling holes in my bags or running wires everywhere. Admire your ingenuity but I am not drilling holes in my bags.
I've actually been using an AGM battery i got from a locla place called batteries plus, for about 4 years now.it cost about 30% less than a stock battery, and I haven't taken any special care of it,or put it on a charger unless it was low.from what i understand,it's a gel soaked cloth, and I've had far better luck with it then any other bike battery ever, and I've been riding my entire adult life.

Darn! Wished I had thought of that! Just this morning went to the H-D store and bought a new battery for my 05' FXDL. I've had the bike 5 years this month and the original battery was working just fine until yesterday. I left the key on while talking to a friend for quite a while. When I noticed my f*** up the bike wouldn't start. I kept it on the tender overnight but it had finally crapped out. The 2010 H-D catalog listed the battery at $99.95 but when they rang it up it was $116.95. I would have much rather paid the $79 but if I get another 5 years out of the new battery, the extra $40 won't be so bad.
