Default Electrical Question

I have an accessory adapter that connects to my battery tender plug that I often use for my phone charger on road trips. Yesterday my phone was nearly dead and decided to plug it in while at a friend's house. The charger wouldn't work. Thinking the battery tender plug had a bad connection to the battery, I tried the phone charger in my buddy's truck with the same results. My wife and I went camping last weekend and used my truck to charge our phones over the weekend, so the charger was working. When I got home later in the evening I plugged the charger into my truck and had the same results - charger wasn't working. There is a light on the charger to indicate it's on. The light never came on any time I pluged it in after pulling it out of my truck.

Could I have killed the charger by connecting it to my battery tender plug? My charger is a Sprint charger and I've never had this problem before.

Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? Perhaps a fuse between the battery and positive side of the battery tender connection?

A fuse wouldn't be a bad idea, but car chargers do go bad. I had one from Verizon that used to blow the fuse for the lighter in my car. Of course, it was several years old since I kept buying the same brand of phone and kept using the original car charger.

I'd bet it just gave up the ghost. 12V input is 12V input. Amperage will vary but not by enough to damage a charger between a bike and a car.

Edit: Oh yeah, if you do want to go the fuse route on your battery tender pigtail, just go buy one from the dealer. They come with a fuse inline already.

This seems like a no brainer. If you tried the charger in several different vehicles and it didn't work in any of them, the charger is toast. Get a new one. Some chargers have a fuse inside the plug you shove into the cigarette lighter outlet. The whole thing unscrews, there is a spring & glass fuse inside. You might check that.

Don't know if this is your problem but, If I run my phone battery to low my DC charger I use on my bike, and car, won't recharge the battery. But if I charge it for a little while in the ac charger, it will then charge on a dc charger. I just don't let my battery get to low before trying to recharge it on the bike. Hope this helps. A battery tender will not charge if voltage is below 9 or so, not sure of the number.
