GIECO was one of the few insurers that I could find that would insure a bike in D.C. I had Progressive in MI on both my VRSCF and my wife's Duc. When we moved they wouldn't cover in us in D.C. and I had to change. GIECO's service on the phone and internet was good. Thankfully I havn't had to make a claim yet.
I think your anger is mis-directed. The company offers low rates to begin with and then a government comes along and says they can't raise them, even if claims increase. The company has two options, they either carry on and likely loose money or, they leave. It would appear to me the government backed them into a corner. As usual, when government interfers, individuals pay the price.
Tell that to all of the people that I knew that had to re-insure as high risk drivers because their policies were canceled out from under them.
I do hold Geico responsible. None of the other insurers pulled out of the state. Many threatened. None did. THEY chose to pull out. If they were the low-cost insurer, then the cap wouldn't affect them because it was obviously higher than they charged for insurance, since the big-name insurers fell under the exact same cap.
I had Geico, until I saw all of the complaints about them here on this site. I switched to State Farm based on people's experiences filing claims, and the rates were less than half of what I was paying with Geico!
The original post was a bit fuzzy on one item. The 89 year did not have a current license and GEICO was his insurance. My apologiies for the confusion.
I have had all of my vehicles insured with GEICO for many years, had a few minor claims, and always received good service. Never had a motorcycle claim.
Is the statement of liability in this case a release form so his insurance will kick in? Or by using the word liability; makes it sound like she is admitting a liability of hitting the stalled truck. I would have that verified first but in most cases they WILL pay but it might go to court. BTW -Have had Geico for about 6-7 years. Cheap and no problems.
Normally insurance companies want to hash it out with each other, maybe they just wanted to know who to haggle with?
Get an attorney, don't give any statements. If they insured an unlicensed driver who hit others and there is personal injury involved they will start rolling over quick.

Geico was quick, fair and easy to deal with when I was rearended by a chick with no insurance. They actually quoted the damage HIGHER than the dealership did for repairs. They are still trying to get the chick to pay the costs and I get a letter every couple of months about the status of the reimbursement of my deductible.

NEVER give written or verbal statements without first consulting an attorney, NEVER!
Kind of sounded to me like the brother in law and sis were on a bike and maybe were not insured? Like others have stated, Florida is a no fault state, and any claims should go through each individual's insurance company. Even if there is no insurance coverage on the MC, it may even go through their auto insurance.
I was once employed as a tow truck operator, and while riding as a passenger that day we were involved in a small accident where another vehicle struck the truck from behind as it maneuvered around us into the next lane. Although I had just the week before been added to the insurance of the truck as an operator/employee, the accident was filed on my own personal auto insurance. Never quite figured out why I needed to be on the truck insurance policy if that were the case, (the company's insurance carrier insisted), but there it is...
