hey folks, so im pretty new to this whole harley thing, I went for a 114 mile ride today from biggs air feild, which is adjacent to Fort Bliss, TX (El Paso area) up to anthony, NM and into Las Cruses and back. Very fun ride until the end the wind gusts here in El Paso reached over 60mph. MAN! talk about a beat up with out a windsheild. So I found out a couple 'must haves' I need a windsheild, which is the best that you guys recommend an a 2009 Sporty Low? And....Forward Controls. definetly want those.... i have long legs....and 2 hours...yea.. a lil cramped on those mids. So, advice on the best place to buy the forward controls???
I had the HD Compact screen on my 2009 1200C, engine guard and detachable
medium low sisybar with rack. If I had kept it, I probably would have
moved the turn signals back and added a set of easily removable
saddlebags.
What Mike has on that Sporty above is pretty typical: HD Quick-Detachable windshield (worth the money, IMO--very sturdy and no leave-behind hardware on the bike) sissy-bar and cargo rack.
Lots of options for getting forward controls. I have a 1200C, so mine came with them stock.
In terms of customizing in general, three ways to go:
1. Comfort (anything for rider/passenger comfort)
2. Cosmetic
3. Performance (anything to make it louder/faster)
You seem to be going for comfort mods. Good place to start. Once you take care of windshield and forward controls, you can also think of a new seat (I have 15K on the stock seat--it's fine for me, but lots of folks change them out), new vibration-absorbing grips and pegs, rear shocks and front fork springs, etc. You can get that thing pretty plush, if you want.
But, a lot of guys who buy a Sportster trade them in after a year or two. To keep that option open for you, try to buy mods that you can remove easily and sell on eBay or here in the classified section. Then bolt the stock stuff back on. You actually can get a lot of your money back.
I have a Del rey windshield from Memphis Shades. http://www.memphisshades.com/sportshield_family.shtml
The hardware stays on the forks but is very unobtrusive. I had the H-D Detachable but the shield was too large for my taste.
Be sure to use Lok Tite on the forward controls when you put them on.
Next you'll want to upgrade the shocks and/or front springs or fork oil.
