I was helping a friend take his bike into the dealer the day before yesterday, and as we turned onto the highway that fronts the dealership there were probably 6 or 8 police cars with lights flashing and traffic diverted to one lane both ways. There was the remains of what looked like an EG on the side of the road. When we pulled into the dealership one of the salesman said they had taken the rider off in an ambulance and he didnt look good. He felt bad because he had waved at the ride who had waved back. The rider failed to notice that the speed drops way off and that traffic had slowed in front of him. When he looked back he was almost into the rear end of a car and took evasive action which put him into the rear end of a semi-truck. Waving is great, but you have to remain aware of your surroundings, and such a simple thing caused such hurt. I am praying that he is going to alright.
I don't believe that a wave was the cause of that crash. I will pray for the rider and I hope that he/she is ok but the bottom line is that if you are smart and alert about where you are and what's going on at all times, you will know when it is safe to, or not safe to, wave.
I give the V-twin wave when I can. If shifting or turning, I just give the head nod so they don't think I am ignoring them.
On a lighter note, I laugh everytime I pass this lady on a light blue scooter (Vespa) with her big pink helmet giving me the Harley wave. I gotta wave back, but it is just too funny. I pass her on the way home from work when I ride.
Waving is ok,... to a point. I have noticed some riders almost run off the road or into someone else trying to wave at me while we were riding in heavy traffic. Noob's I'm guessing, but maybe not. That is not a smart move, IMHO.
I hope the rider recovers. IF he didn't have time because his hand was off the bars to make a complete stop, that's probably part of the cause.
I don't wave in traffic, don't wave when stopped because I'm keeping the clutch in and covering the mirrors, don't wave on twisties, don't wave making turns. Bottom like, if waving takes away your attention to something you need to be paying attention to...don't wave.
