For those wearing a textile jacket, what are wearing and how do you like it? I was thinking of getting a leather vest, but am starting to think that a textile jacket might be cooler and offer more protection. Never owned one, so not sure what brand is a good one. Want something simple and not flashy. Black with no graphics or big name brands.
Thanks!
Living in Texas, leather just isn't an option for me in the summertime. I have the HD mesh jacket for the summers and really like it. It is light gray with reflective piping and has the elbow and shoulder soft armor. It gives me some protection both from an unplanned fall, but also from the sun. Its comfortable while you are moving even in 100 degree temps and will prevent you from dehydrating so fast on the longer rides down here.
My only complaint about it would be if you forget to fasten the velcro wrist straps you can catch your grip in your sleeve.
Tour Master Air Intake 2 white/silver for hot weather. Great ventilation.
Have the jacket and pants, with the removable wind/water proof liners they are nice for the 40 deg mornings and 80 deg afternoons. I've taken them into some rather sever rain and came out dry (other than gloves and boots).
I have a TourMaster Draft Air jacket. It has CE approved armor in the shoulders and elbows, with a backpad, and I have a water/windproof liner, and an insulated liner. It's very comfortable in the summer with the liners removed, but unlike a vest I still get shoulder and elbow protection if there is a crash. With the liners I can ride year round.
There are plenty of other options in mesh jackets, I just got a good deal on that one. I think a mesh jacket with armor is a great way to go, especially for summer riding to maintain a good balance of comfort v. safety.
I have the Draft Air as well and really like it. Last Summer was the first time using a mesh jacket for me and I love it. Got my Draft Air off of eBay for $80.00. But, the seller has a shop in my town and I was to try it on first.
I like Joe Rocket Mesh and HD Mesh jacket has done a good job. I wear the HD GORE-TEX jean jacket with light armor the most. It has vents built in and can zip up as it gets cool. But it not waterproof. HD FXRG has vents and is good jacket if it's not real hot out.
I'm a bigger guy and love the fit and function of the Olympia Airglide 3 Mesh Tech Jacket. (I actually have the Airglide 2 jacket for 3 seasons). Mesh outer shell with a warm, waterproof liner. Have used it in the rain very successfully. It also comes in many color combinations, even though mine is black with grey accents. Great reflective pipeing also. http://www.olympiamotosports.com/airglide/airglide.htm
I have totally ditched the leather for this jacket. Maybe for good.
When out in the sun, you will actually stay cooler in long sleeves, than you would in a leather vest. To further that, because a mesh jacket breathes so well, even in city riding, very rarely will you be uncomfortable.
Having said that, pretty much any mesh jacket with armor will do you proud; you just need to find one that fits.
This might be an appropriate place to mention that I have one of Harley's original FXRG mesh jackets for sale in the Classified section. Great jacket bought used in as-new condition, it was too good of a deal to pass up. I just never got around to wearing it. PM me if interested.
