Scares the hell out of ya doesn't it? I see turkeys all the time along the road edge, sometime just not soon enough. The darn things have an almost horizontal take off. I don't know which is worse the turkeys or the vultures.
Your luckier than my nephews buddy, he took it in the head and was dead before he hit the ground. Broke his neck. That really sucked because he told evryone he was taking one last ride before putting his bike up for the winter; it was his last ride.

I saw one by the side of the road last year, slowed to about 25 and rode the center. Damned if he didn't jump at me, I turned to my left and with my right arm covered my face with my upper arm, he hit me right in the right rib cage. Felt like a basketball. Looked behind, and saw feathers and him running off the road. I laughed out loud.
South Texas were I grew up it the wild pig that will get ya! They love to dig up the soft dirt in the ditches along side the roads. Even more so if there is any kind of standing water. They get spooked and they will run at ya.

Today on my 120 mile ride to and from Nebraska on the skinny roads, about 1,000 little grey and yellow birds took turns scaring the crap outta me. Each one I passed would fly at me and then brake hard to the right. Looked like little fighter pilot birds.
