My riding buddy also had this problem with his '02 Fatboy. I was also a disbeliever until we disassembled it in my garage and tightened it. This was the second time for this bike.
I am stranded in the middle of Utah (great state too...I love it.).....but....my friggin' comp nut is loose again. Ringing like a bell! The last time I had my home shop do the "fix" with a personal guarantee my troubles are over.....BULL S*&T.
I have about had a gut-full and have had Harleys for 25-years and never had this issue on any other ride...except this TC I am on now. When I do get to a shop that has the time to break the primary open and tighten the comp nut again...with another guarantee...I plan to either weld it on and when it comes loose again...I will simply blow the entire ride up or set fire to it.
No...not really...I am just frustrated and this sort of crap can really make a guy want to purchase a Honda! I will put a fix on it somehow so I can make a complete 4,000 mile trip without some major malfunction.
It's a common problem and we always have at least one come loose on a long trip. This time it was my turn again....I have had two other turns in past trips.
My compensator went out on my 08, It also tore up the rotor. Replaced both under warranty. It started with what sounded like a bad starter gear at 45,000 Mi. The service mgr. said it was an ongoing problem. There have been many threads on this.
Any thing can happen. I replaced the comp sprocket on my 07 Ultra with the SE comp sprocket. I used a 1/2" air impact at 120psi on the comp bolt. It would not budge. I had to carefully put heat on the head of the bolt to soften up the loctite to break it loose. So. If some had a comp bolt come loose by its self it is a very freakish happening.
