Default Poker Run???????

I have been asked by the local Volunteer Fire Department if I would look into putting a Poker Run together for a new fundraiser.

I have been doing ATV poker runs for about 13 years for the F.D. and they have worked out pretty well with crowds upto 1500 riders, but over the last few years attendance as steadily dropped.

I really don't ride alot of sponsered rides myself. But I said I would look into doing one to see how well it works out. My first question is what does everyone feel is a good distance for a ride? What I have in mind is to ride a loop with 3 check point along it, with cash prizes, and one more at the end which is also the starting point. Then having some type of meal for the riders maybe a chicken bbq or something like that.

Any input, ideas, good or bad experiences would be appreciated.

seems like most poker runs are what about 100 to 150 miles with last bike out at around 11am and last bike in by 4 or 5pm. usually some type of loop or circle in the area. Usually have about 4 to 5 stops with the start point counting as one of those.

You know the guys better than us are you looking at bars to stop at or something different. How many people to you expect and get plenty of volunteer's and possibly you can get local buisness to help with the food at the end.

There is a small VFD that does an escorted 70 mile ride followed by a BBQ. I don't think the VFD members wanted to be part of sponsoring a ride that included bar stops.

I am just getting started on any type of planning. I did spent a little time tonight mapping out a few possibilities of a route. Nothing at all has been decided. I would like to try not to make the check points at only bars. But due the the area we are located this may be diffucult not to use a bar or two. The directions that I am leaning toward running I could stop by a harley shop.

What I have in mind right now would be to register at the firehouse, have 3 check points along whatever route is chosen and then the 4th check point would be when they return to the firehouse. Where we would host the meal. We do also have alot of land if people would like to attend from further distances and like to camp. We could open the firehouse so people could use shower if they like.

Right now I have 3 possible routes mapped out they vary in mileage - 129 miles, 158 miles, and 187 miles. One of these might be used or an altogether different route may get mapped. We are in central PA and the routes that are planned would head north into some of the more scenic and more mountainess areas of the state. There is not a whole lot of restaurants, bars, shops, etc to chose from with any of the routes but enough to make it work well.

I can come up with alot of ideas but am looking for any opinions, and experience that may help this be a good time for all attending.

Thanks for the help!

we did one for a co worker whom we all ride with and his wife passed unexpectedly. We did have it at local bar but it was a family friendly event. We had hog roast and some younger kids were running around the place until later that night when things got wild and DJ came on.

We did have an improptu action were people from work and local buisness donated items and we just did a quick auction it was fun and raised some more money. Also familes and friends brought covered dish's and vendor that works with us cooked the hog and a coworker donated the hog was a great event for a very good friend. You can also do a 50/50 raffle and instead of the auction have a table or two with the items donated on it with coffee cans and a person can buy tickets and put them in the can for the item they would like to win then draw a winning ticket during the meal or after or before for each item.

Where in central pa are you at and when are you planning to have the run?

you could do the poker cards one of two ways i have seen it done you draw a card at each stop which takes more work and people at the stops to do the cards or you can have everyone draw there cards at the start and fill out a paper for each person give them the option to buy and extra card or two for $1 or $2 a card then that way who ever is at the start point can figure out who the winner is while your all out on the ride and all you guys have to do is ride and not worry to much about drawing cards and all that while your at the stops.

We are in southern Clearfield County, about 30 miles north of Altoona and 30 miles west of State College. The routes I have planned now would run north west into the area of Cooks Forest, or north east into Bennezette and Sinnemahoning (alot of Elk in that area for viewing), or just a more northern loop that falls in between the 2 I already listed.

We have always done our ATV poker runs a little different than with the cards, due to gambling laws in PA. We just draw poker chips with some chips being good for cash prizes. About 10 or 12 years ago the state started getting difficult about the use of cards.

We could do a pig roast like you mentioned, that would be pretty easy. Every september we do a large drawing and party where we roast 4 hogs all weighing in between 250 and 300 pounds. We usually have around 1000 people attending.

I was leaning toward doing closer to 200 miles but some think that is to far. Hell I do 150 - 200 miles for a quick afternoon ride, but I guess alot more don't.
