OK, so I've had the new '09 1200 for a month now. Every bump in the road seems like I'm bottoming out... I ride over road tar patch and it seems like I'm fish tailing...My hands are sore five miles into a ride due to griping the bars too tight....
What do I need to do to relax during a ride? I grew up on dirt bikes so I know the basics. Granted, that was 25+ years ago. I'm a 40's something dude that could use some advice. I need some confidence.
Also just relax. Until then. Go to a vacant parking lot with some cones and practice riding and leaning until you are comfortable on your new motorcycle. Large Styrofoam cups filled with rocks make decent markers. Just don't hit them.. LOL Oh yeah. Don't hit bumps.

Try flappin your arms (Hands still on the bars of course). If you cant, your grip is too tight. +1 on trusting the Bike. It takes a few to get used to how they handle. My first took me about 600 miles before i started to get comfortable. I am sill learning every day and the rewards are great. I have taken a BRC and ERC. I will be taking an MSRC later this year. The Navy told me my XR1200 is to much like a sport bike and I need to take it. Whatever. My courses are free and well worth the time. My firstt 50 miles were in Navy housing.25mph speed limit, speed bumps, loads of distractions and parked cars. Tight corners and lots of turns. I did that before I hit open road. Take your time and learn more about YOU and the bike slowly.
