Default affordable GPS

Tried a search, first, but could not find anything on an affordable GPS.

I see that one can buy a very wonderful, well-suited and waterproof GPS for $600-800! Has anyone had good luck with a much less expensive one, say $150 new?

Don't want a radio or cell-phone; don't even want voice; in fact don't want to hear it at all--just want a nice, large, daylight screen with text directions. Prefer mainstream product like Garmin. Any other riders here with similar needs found something suitable one can operate while wearing gloves?

All comments welcome.

Whew ! with text directions ? Really doubt you could read it on such a small screen while riding a bike. I have been on a search myself to find such an animal, but with no text. I have come down to a couple of choices. One being a cell phone which is the new Nokia Nuron with built in Ovi maps (works like google and telenav maps and is free). You can pull the sim card and have no phone service and still use the built-in GPS. OR.....a handheld Garmin unit of some choice. I personally don't want a handlebar mounted unit.
Here is a couple of websites to search. Maybe they can help you find an answer.

Thinking along the lines of:

"Turn rt @ Main St 500'. "

Or: "Miles to go: 123."

Or: "Miles to gas: 1.2"

...some visual clue to the info that we select to be shown/ not heard.

Perhaps most will want these features I neither want nor will use, such as PDA's and other devices--that's progress, I guess. Perhaps it is possible that no one even makes a car GPS anymore which does not give voice commands/info, though they're available for yachts and aircraft. Still, it is interesting to see how everyone solves this problem for himself.

My thanks to all posters so far for their comments and links.

Edit:
Great idea to have the service manual along!

I have and use a Garmin Quest I purchased off of eBay. Factory refurbished, 1 yr warranty, been using it 3 years no problems. Paid $125 for it and $36 for a Ram mount for the bike. I ride all day with it and then come home and throw it on the charger over night and it is ready the next day. Best thing about it is it will operate up to 20 hours on a charge or you can add a 12v power outlet to your bike and never worry about charging it. The screen is a little small, but you get used to that and it is loaded with features.

Look at Bestbuy.com and check out some of the refurbished units. Some can be had for under $100.00.

+1 on the iPhone. There is an app called Co Pilot. Very accurate good maps. I have a mount on my bike for my iPhone because that's where all my music is so I can use it for specific directions or just looking for a good route to extend my ride. $29 annually includes all the updates.
