Question Crank sensor replacement mileag/age.

Looking to see out of the people who have had to change one what kind of miles/time do you have on your bike. Bike farted once and since then have code 41 for ckp sensor. I am about 28K right now. Don't wanna be stranded.

I'm on my 4th (POS) CKP sensor in 60,000 miles.

There is a root cause to that failure and it is not the sensor. That many failures/replacements are statistically impossible. I would consult a different dealer for an opinion or find out which supplier makes the sensor and call their engineering department. They will know. However, if you get oil on it that can cause failure as well.

That's a new CKP every fifteen thousand miles, not cool. I have an 04 Sporty Custom I picked up used with only 3300 miles I hope I don't have the same luck.

How difficult is it to replace and what's the general cost?

It's easy to replace, about 10 minutes once you've done one, but expect to pay about $50.00 for the sensor. And yes, it's a common and recurring problem on 04up Sporties.

I don't need to consult anyone else, multiple Sporty forums have mile long threads on the issue. The sensors $uck and the only source is HD. Since the sensor mounts into the primary case, getting oil on it is a given.

BTW, I turn my own wrenches.

My son rides a 2004 XL1200C and he's on his third sensor with less than 30,000 miles. Previous post about Sportys having a sensor problem is well documented except with the dealer network. All too often they don't run the DTC's and diagnose the trouble as carb related.

Edit- 75,000+ miles on the original sensor in my Road King.

2000 Fat Boy with 43,000 miles on it. Failed 3 weeks ago, just wouldn't start. One of my many issues I've had lately...put a new battery in Mar 3rd, rode it yesterday, 0 volts and replaced...
