Default Windshield??

I bought a 2007 1200c Sportster last week and it came with a detachable windshield. This being my first bike, this question may be naive, buy here it is.
Should I keep the windshield on / off or does it really matter, me being new to riding?

Either way is fine. Ride it first locally without the shield and get used to how the wind feels. Once you start riding long rides at highway speeds you will probably be like most and prefer the shield. It delays fatigue and offers protection from bugs and debris kicked up by other vehicles. But it is very enjoyable being in the wind. Good luck, ride safe and welcome to being a Harley rider. Enjoy.

Thanks for the advice and the welcome txfxstrider.
I have checked out a few HD forums since I got the bike and this site bar far is the best. Quick and honest responses and good people.
I am still waiting on answers form other places, perhaps being a new-bee was beneath them? Anyway, thanks for the advice.

I usually use mine on longer highway rides, then take it off around town to look cool. Unless it's cold out, then it stays on. Try it both ways and ignore anyone who tells you not too use it if you like it on.

That's the great thing about the quick release. Take it off and put in on quick to meet your needs. Around town I took it off, long rides I would put it on. The big difference for me was the noise level of the wind without it on. Eventually, I just quit taking it off.

Windshield or not, choose what you like and what suits your typical rides.

I find that what kind of handlebars I use and even the position I put them in changes fairly significantly with and without the windshield. So while the Windshield is easy on and easy off there's more to it on a ride of more than an hour or so than just the presence or absence of my windshield. Just my 0.02.

I just remembered that it is )or is almost) Luv Bug season here. I may need the windshield after all, along with full body armor, full face helmet and a see through umbrella before it's said and done...

These days you can snap one on and off so easily you'll be able to tell pretty quickly what kind of riding is suited for one, and what kind isn't.

Be sure and wipe the luv bugs off of your bike every night before you park it with a soft clean rag and a spray polish. They will etch your paint and pit your front forks fast with their dead smushed asses. Don't believe me go to a place where bikes gather and look at the front forks on them. You will see who wipes and who just parks.

Got very used to mine and love it. Too much wind on the highway without it.
Be carefull when snapping it back on. I broke one of the clamps ther first time I re-installed it. Make sure they are pushed on square, then lock it down. A little off kilter and it can break.
