Made a small discovery at my local Shell station today. Seems upon delivery the tanker driver is adding 10% ethanol to the fuel being delivered, now most of us have experienced the in-efficiency of ethanol, lower fuel mileage for no obvious reasons. Here's the kicker, the State of Mi is NOT required to label the fuel pumps that the fuel contains X amount of ethanol. I sent my state reps an e-mail to right this mis-representation to the consumer. Won't you do the same?

They need to label it! If you run it in something that is not accustomed to it, it will clean the varnish in the lines and plug the fuel filter. Learned my lesson going thru Iowa years ago.

Thats not surprising with our state government. At least they grew a sack and convicted Kwame Kilpatrick.

I thought most gasoline sold in Michigan is 10% ethanol. It actually raises the octane level

"E10, sometimes called gasohol, is a fuel mixture of 10% anhydrous ethanol and 90% gasoline that can be used in the internal combustion engines of most modern automobiles and light-duty vehicles without need for any modification on the engine or fuel system."

" As of 2006 mandates for blending bioethanol into vehicle fuels had been enacted in at least 36 states/provinces and 17 countries at the national level, with most mandates requiring a blend of 10 to 15% ethanol with gasoline."[

I haven't looked in the owner's manual but I'll bet it says 10% ethanol is ok. I can't find how much effect 10% has on mileage, but I'm not worrying about it.

.
This is correct. All gasoline at pumps contain at least 10% ethanol. The state is pushing for 20% by 2012 if memory serves me correctly. I work at an ethanol plant on the east side and I get my info. from my bosses so I figure it's legit.

Higher octane doesn't mean more power in the gas! It's a common misconception. The Octane rating describes how explosively or "fast" the gas will burn. Higher compression engines as commonly found in high-performance road vehicles, or competition vehicles, need the higher octane to prevent the gas from prematurely igniting, or burning to explosively, which is known as "pinging" and "detonation" in an IC engine. If you run higher octane fuel in a lower compression engine as is common now in our EPA-limited motors, it'll seem to run smoother maybe because the burn on ignition is smoother. However, you'll notice a decrease in MPG and if you dyno'd the motor, it'd probably be down on torque and power too. So, it'll be better on the life of your motor, but it doesn't add power.

The intent of the post wasn't to debate the effects or the amount of ethanol our motors can run on. It's about the behind the back the state is allowing the gas stations to sell something that is not identified prior to prchase. Some smaller engines, boat engines, non-vehicular engines can't tolerate ethanol laced gasoline. But we seemed to be stuck with it, burn more hydrocarbons so that we can have cleaner air. Just tell us what you are selling, that's all.
