WTF!!! Is this situation enough to start a class action suit against Harley Davidson? It appears to be a problem across a wide range of models. My Dyna Low Rider gets really hot too and when I shut down the motor I hear this strange popping and cracking noise. Is my motor going to eventually crack and fall apart?
Are you a lawyer looking to start a class action suit against HD? Student writing a term paper? Engineer trying to develop something to alleviate the problem? A little more info might get some more serious answers. JMHO And an intro might help too.
Research for report on developing something to alleviate the problem is my angle. I didnt want to get to much into the explaining part as many on these forums like to make jokes.

Isn't heat a normal by-product of an internal combustion engine? Every motorcycle engine that I have, no matter if it is a V-twin or another configuration gets hot. .And on my water cooled car and truck, the thermostat opens when the coolant temperature reaches around 200 degrees. So what is going to alleviate this normal byproduct of the internal combustion engine?
Took a ride on my '09 Road Glide. Cylinder heads got hot.
Took a ride on my '06 V-Rod. In spite of liquid cooling, cylinder heads still hot (but maybe a bit less than the Road Glide). Couldn't keep my hand on them long enough to get a good read.

07 on the Harley touring get a little hot, especially at idle conditions on hot days! The Heat is a by product of tree hugging EPA types, they leaned out the AFR and they like the EPA Cams.
2010 on they added on a Catalytic Converter as the clean air standard for motorcycles got even tougher. Not for just Harley but for domestic and import.
Most of the mods we do for performance will cool them off so I don't count that as a Harley Tax.
The Cat in the headpipe on the 2010 touring makes life a little more interesting but for the time being this also can be worked around!
The Harley touring is somewhat hotter from 2007 on but so what, they all are. If your paper is for litigation purposes against an American Manufacturer that still provides some high paying assembly jobs, you picked the wrong time and place to do your research.
Must be some liberal Education facility you attend and you did not mention what course you are taking that would require such an off beat subject topic. If the paper is for and educational facility?
I am sure by the end of the 2010 riding season Harley will be addressing the heat problem in extreme conditions, hot days in traffic. Most of the people on this forum have already solved the heat problem and have moved on. As you said there are several forums on the mods we do to cool the touring bikes down, they should suffice for any legitimate study of the narrow range heat problem.
I own a 2010 Touring that will run all day in traffic on a hot day without the EITMS kicking in! No more than 230 Deg F oil temp that cools down just below 200 as soon as I get it back in the wind. Did some cooling modifications but the 2007 through 2010 can be made to operated within reasonable heat parameters at a reasonable cost beyond what we spend to mod for performance.
The Twin Cam is still a viable engine and will operate even without modifications with the advent of the EITMS. Most just do the extra mods for rider comfort not engine reliability. As stated before, air cooled internal combustion engines are hot in the summer time to sit on, just part of the riding experience! All air cooled engines not just Harley's.
