I'd pull in the clutch, shift to neutral (to eliminate engine braking) and put on hazard lights (if you have them). Once in neutral left arm straight up as I pull over. Hopefully I could coast to the safest spot along the road.

Never had a problem like this before. Will have a full check done 'cause never want it to happen again. It was on a road trip - crud in the gas (I use high octane)?, debris in the tank?, fuel pump??? What would temporarily stop gas flow while running and go away when I restart? Anyone experience a similar issue?
A few weeks ago going about 45 in the left lane (city street), put on my right turn signal to change lanes, then changed my mind because of a car coming up to fast in the right lane. Missed the turn signal with my thumb and hit the engine cut off instead. Result was exactly like the situation you described (I think the gas light comes on when the engine is shut off). It got awfully quiet and I realized what I did (I have a keen sense for the obvious). I was able to pull the clutch and restart on the fly before my speed had dropped more than 5 mph. Any chance you hit the kill switch by accident?? (just sayin', might save you a trip to the dealer)

Yeah, the guy sounds like kinda a hothead. If I was loosing power on my bike I'd be concentrating on getting it over to the emergency lane. If you have your blinker on and your ride is slowing I'd think the guy would have figured it out.

You did exactly what most of us would have done under the same curcumstances. As for the knothead that felt you should have waved them by...you should seriously consider letting him lead since he has issues with adapting to situations at hand!

Question: Did he even stop to help?

Jax - wish it was just a case of accidentally hitting the kill switch but am 99.99% sure it was not. I had noticed that I was falling behind the lead bike for no reason and really figured it up when I throttled and nothing happened. Thanks for the thought though - would be nice to not have to spend $$$ right now.

Check the wiring harness under your seat where the wires pass between the frame and the motor. I had an 03 VROD. It is a common place for vibration wear that causes all kinds of weird problems. I hope whatever it is, it is an easy fix.

We were told in motor school to tap the top of your helmet if you are having mechanical problems....this will let the other riders behind you know that you are having problems and its a lot easier to see than the waving of a hand

I grew up learning that tapping on top of your helmet or head meant Leo ahead.
