I also thought tapping the top of the helmet means "popo" but that, too, would get those behind me to slow down.

This is kind of what I was trying to say. This is what I was taught and just would have been my first reaction. The fact that one of your fellow rides brought up the question suggests that he was not comfortable with the situation. Next time when riding with a group it might not be a bad idea to set up a signal procedure before leaving so everyone is one the same page. Glad you made it to the side safely and hope you get to the bottom of the problem. Have a great summer and ride safe.

taking a hand off the bars .. what is the big deal I quit often ride with one hand on the bars and don't panic about it. waving a hand to let others know you have problem is no big deal turn signals who looks at them anyway and mine are in the rafters of my garage so real hard to see.
maybe I am just being a grouchy old fart but just get out of the way and try to let others know what you are doing ..has worked for me for 50+ years of riding..
