Can't comment on Motorcycle plugs but I know car plugs have the same multi-high-performance market out there. In the case of a Volvo engine, the best plugs are the ones that come in the car from the factory, bar none. I've yet to see any other plug do anything except give bragging rights to the buyer and take their money. In some cases 1-2K down the road misfires etc, become a problem. I know the after market world is big out there and people like to change things cause they can, but.................. The items that you can change are on a very rare occasion any better than what is stock, and can never be proven to be better on a dyno, or in the case of brakes show better stopping distances.
Not against aftermarket products, I've spent my fair share trying to be just a bit better, but in the end it's back to stock. (I hate it when design Engineers are right)
Thats what I thought. When I asked for plugs this weekend they automatically gave me the gold ones, next time ill make sure I ask for regular stock. They seem to work well but thats probaly just because the others were worn.
Plugs all do one thing...spark. Platinum plugs last longer, but that's it. For us regular folks, we'll NEVER be able to say or tell if our motors run better because we spend more $ on a set of plugs! In a labratory environement, with test equipment, you can "see" differences in resistance, spark intensity under pressure etc. Kind of like the claims that a certain spark plug wire gets you more HP. Bologna. I'm not a cheap guy, but knowing how HD's marketing works, think I'll just buy the "regular" plugs and use the money saved for...chrome, or...beer, or...something.
BEFORE you buy new plugs, check out what's in your bike now. If they have given you good performance with the gas you buy and they have lasted long enough for you then replace them with the same type.
In my 99Ultra that's stock other than a good air cleaner rig she runs on regular gas with the stock plugs about as good as one could ask. She's got good power for stock and get 42MPG with no pinging.
but if yor running a hotter cam, better air intake with nearly straight pipes you would want a hotter performance plug.
